SAFEWORK SA is investigating the death of a man in a workplace accident at Whyalla.

The Whyalla man, 37, died at CSL's floating offshore platform in the Spencer Gulf at 8.55am yesterday.

He was working for Inco Ships, which operates barges to transport iron ore.

SafeWork SA would not release the cause of his death pending the outcome of an investigation.

A spokesman for CSL Australia and Inco Ships said it was not yet known what caused the man's death.

"CSL Australia and Inco Ships express their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The companies will provide support to his family," he said.

"We have limited information on the accident at this point in time.

CSL Australia, Inco Ships and the relevant authorities are investigating the incident and processes are in place to ensure the operations are safe and affected personnel are supported in these difficult circumstances."

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
