HI all, I just got this little creature to the initial test startup phase.
The board LED's light up but nothing on the display although a green light comes on on the underside of the display.
Any suggestions, I tried the solder joints for cold solder but no change.
I just bought this device but could firmware be an issue?

OzzyIceman,

Can you post good quality pictures of the front and the back of the board?

Hi Rob,

My bGiegie is complete and seems to be working fine.
Next step, set up its ability to record data.
Could you tell me the exact part number of the cable used to connect a Mac computer (USB) or mini version and the 6 pin plug (3.3v), I guess, to update firmware on the bGiegie?
I’d like to order one before it becomes necessary.

Cheers,  Bill

Bill,

The instructions on how to use it should be on the WiKi.

Hi Bill-

Also, just to add unless you plan to do some hacking you don’t actually need this cable. The bGiegie Nano is a “finished” device so to speak and we aren’t actively developing anything new for it, so there’s unlikely to be any firmware updates. It’s been stable for many years so the firmware you have now should last forever.

Hope that makes sense!
-Sean

Hello Sean,

Thanks for the update.
That saves extra headaches.
How about WiFi.
Is it possible to equip this unit so logged information is sent via WiFi rather than pulling out the card and downloading it.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Sean

I was looking for the circuit schematics for the bGeigie, but can't find them: maybe I'm being dumb, but can you point me at them, please?

Hi,
bGeigie does not have wifi - it would drain the battery quickly. As I know you can get a Bluetooth module and transfer the data to a phone / tablet with Safecast app. But we never tried it as we need to keep the possibility to work with the LOG files before uploading them to the API.

Jan

Well that keeps things simple.
Love the unit anyway, can’t wait to get it running in the field.

Bill,

There is a "work in progress" project on Github of the bGeigieCast. Currently in Beta testing
It is a WiFi and BlueTooth Xbee compatible addon. But that is for advanced users at the moment.

Jan,

I have here a bGeigiecast running for about 10hours on a 3000mA LiPo. Sending every 30 seconds data to the Safecast servers. Works fine for me. The code is currently even not optimized for the wifi.

Normally I have a docking station where the bGeigeiNano with bGeigieCast work like a fixed sensor and when I move it out of the WiFi zone it can switch to BLE and keep sending data if needed. In my case, I do not even switch t BLE mode. I keep it in fixed mode all the time. In my car, I have a QI charger and the bGeigieNano with bGeigieCast fit nicely.  So basically all the time data sending on my bGeigieNano.  See for example today's trip to Nara from my home in the attached screenshot.

regards,
rob

Dear Rob,
but standard Nano has 1200 mAh battery:

so you would get the lifetime much shorter. With our bGeigies we do not see any benefit in having wireless module on them. OK, it might be useful to be able use the usb cable to both charge and also download the data without need to remove the microSD card and use the SD adapter or usb reader. The CzechRAD firmware is planned to have this feature so we could have something like "maintenance station" for charging and data download (probably something like virtual COM over USB) for use with multiple devices at one time.

Has anybody looked at using a solar panel to constantly top up a LiPo battery for a bGeigie, or does the charging circuit preclude that?

Bill,

Sorry for the late reply. There is an easy solution.
Get a bGeigieCast (https://bgeigiezen.safecast.jp/store-2/bgeigienano/, That connects though Wi-Fi and will do real-time streaming. Or get a bGeigieZen  as a kit or prebuild (https://bgeigiezen.safecast.jp/store-2/zen/
