IHME just published an analysis concluding that there have been 10 times more Covid deaths in Japan than have been officially attributed to the disease, 108,320 deaths actually vs 10,390 reportedly. If their estimate is right, that's a surprisingly large discrepancy!

While they describe a complex methodology used generally, for nations worldwide, they're not explicit on the exact balance of the methodological tools used for Japan specifically. I would, for example, like to know if they used excess-deaths data for Japan, or merely deduced what those data ought to be (a less certain basis for estimating). Either way, this report might be a red flag for an issue worthy of deeper inquiry. ~Ian
