My Onyx Safecast arrived this week and has been traveling around Maui (Hawaii) with me.  I'd love to take it on a roadtrip and record data around the island, etc and upload it for sharing, however, I can not find any information on how to do that.

I downloaded the OnyxLoader application for Mac OSX but it doesnt seem to do anything useful. The first time I clicked "Save Data" it created a 2k CSV file (with device connected by usb cable).  2nd attempt later today made a 0 byte file.

So how are we supposed to use this really nice looking device?

Well it is still in the "working stage" ...

I am not the authoritative answer here, especially for non-Linux use,
but did you look inside the file (e.g. with a text editor or
spreadsheet software)? Can you post a copy here?

As a start you can use it to detect radiation :-D
The only intended use of the device is that.
However, as you'd expect from a device designed by hackers, there is a
fair amount of "potential" built into it.

To be able to share meaningful data, you need to combine it with GPS
and/or measure a time series in a fixed location.
As the devices just started arriving at their users, the community is
slightly picking up, so stay tuned.

Regards,
Kalin.

   Kalin, Jerry,

I just put together a quick viewer, it's a first step towards an easier to use interface to the Onyx. It just displays the data, I will improve it to let you do a bit of analysis and save in various formats. You can check my other post on the subject in this group, or my blog at www.aerodynes.fr

What are you using to download the log files on linux?  I happen to be a linux (only) user, and I noted on the web page the OnyxLoader is Windows/Mac/Arduino(!?) but no linux solution mentioned.  Is there perhaps something tucked away in the dev sources for use on linux or am I just missing a more obvious option?

Hello Brandyn,

Sorry, I was off-line on a trip in Europe for 3 weeks...
I just use `screen -L` to log the output for now. I have also
implemented CSV output, not sure if it got pushed to the master
though. Try with screen and come back if it doesn't work. This week I
should come back to speed with my e-mail.

Cheers,
Kalin.
