Hi everybody,

I finished assembling main board including breakouts and tried to first test run and diagnostics, *MID-ASSEMBLY TEST POWERUP: * but it failed.

I have checked below list:
  • all resistors are correctly soldered on the right position and sure well soldering on the main board bottom.
  • 1N4148 orientation is checked
  • Red and Blue LEDs positive leads are inserted on the + holes
  • Double checked back side of main board to make sure no soldering points missing

Before test, the switch on the underside of Fio is off.

  • No SD card attached
  • DIP switch both in ON position
  • Toggle switch in the down position
  • slide switch is OFF position

Plug the battery connector to the Fio, the red LED of Fio is lit one time, then red LED on GPS is blink on..off...on...off.

Blue LED on OpenLog board blink three times and then wait around 1.5 sec. it will blink three times again.

No display on small OLED panel

Also, I have attached some photos, can expert guys help me for this problem, many thanks.

I suspect there may be a problem with the FIO firmware. The red status light on the FIO is on the bottom side at the upper end. You'll see it shining on the white patch on the main board between the FIO and the display.

When first switched on, the light may or may not blink once. (It's random because there isn't any control during the first few milliseconds.) Then, within one second, the light should blink twice. That's the FIO going through initialization. About one more second after that, if everything is fine, the red light should come on and stay on.

Hi Clement,

I ran into the same thing on my mid-build test. In my instance, I determined it was because the FIO programming was out of date, and I simply had to update the FIO. Once this was done, everything tested out correctly, AND the OLED lit up perfectly.

To update the FIO, I needed to get a FTDI board from Sparkfun and connect it to the 90degree leads on the top of the FIO, then flash it with XLoader.

SparkFun FTDI Basic Breakout - 3.3V (DEV-09873)

Many thanks Joe and Albert's reply ~

I will update the firmware ASAP and get back here.

Hi Albert,

SparkFun FTDI basic Breakout - 3.3V (DEV-09873) retired

There is a new version as below link, but seems FTDI usb cable still can be used to update FIO firmware if my friends have FTDI usb cable but not sure they have FTDI basic or not.

you can go to here, it shows how to get a tools and upload the firmware to FIO steps, but the subject shows"How to setup build environment on Mac OS X" confused me, i thought it isn't for firmware updated and only for Mac computer.

Anyway I can show my previous steps I did, as above link mentioned, you need a (FTDI breakout board and USB-to-miniUSB cable) or USB to 3.3v TTL Header cable

For my previous steps, I got FTDI Basic board from online shop, for USB-to-miniUSB cable, just go to computer shops to get a new one if you don't have.

If above items ready, go to FTDIchip website to download driver, I use Windows 7, so I selected "setup executable" zip file, download/unzip and install it on Windows 7

Then remove battery and power off switch on Safecast main board, plug the FTDI basic board on FIO, use USB-to-mini USB cable connect between FTDI basic board and PC.

Download xloader (Xloader is a program which upload firmware - a HEX file to FIO)

Download HEX file, filename is "bGeigieNano.hex" on here

Open xloader program and choose above Hex file which you have already downloaded and choose below settings, then click "upload" button, around 30 seconds, xloader will show xxx bytes uploaded.

Quit the Xloader program and unplug usb cable, remove FTDI basic board on FIO, then try to power on Safecast bgeigie nano for first round testing.

Clement Li, Thank You!  I posted for help with FIO firmware update in Jan 2017 but I have removed the post because I found your topic.  I hope they add clear instruction, like you have given for a novice like me, in future additions of the Nano Manual.
