I think I'm about to get a bGeigie nano.  I see a lot of area around here (Santa Cruz, CA) that's unmapped by safecast.  Plus I'm going on a road trip soon.

I'm just a little nervous, since it's such a large investment, and this area isn't contaminated like Japan is.  Yet.

I wonder whether eventually there will be a time-lapse version of the map, so we can see radiation levels rising over time.  If so, it would be good to get some readings along the beaches while it's relatively cold.

Hi Robert-

All of the data in the Safecast dataset (and data taken with bGeigie Nano’s) is time and date stamped, so anyone can download the entire dataset and create visualizations showing the change over time.

That said, it’s unlikely that any you will see any change in the future of on land radiation levels on the west coast of the US because of Fukushima, and will need much more sensitive equipment to detect any change in the water. Our lab has over $25k in monitoring equipment and we expect it to be very difficult for us to even see the change. I point that out in case you were considering this purchase only to see drastic radiation level changes.

Hope that helps,
-sean

I'm not really expecting drastic changes in radiation per se.  Though, I have speculated that radioactive material could concentrate at the beaches through evaporation of ocean mist.  And really it's only a matter of time before some other nuke plant blows up.

Regardless of what anybody expects it's nice to have actual data points.  Otherwise, all we have is speculation and conspiracy theories, which are not in short supply.

I did order the bGeigie nano kit.  :)  I'm good at assembling stuff, so hopefully I'll get it running within a couple of days after receiving it.  Maybe I can use it next weekend!

Great!!! This is what Safecast is about.

It is not difficult, but there are some specifics (like how switches
are left, what is the assembly order), so have a look at the assembly
manual _before_ assembling it ;-)

Have fun and report success!

Cheers,
Kalin.
