Hi,

A log file submitted the 27th of January 2019 appears to be still waiting for approval (Import #40098). A waring tells about a possible radiological anomaly: in that case I was walking along a very ancient and narrow street of a little village in the Alps, with stones radiating something from 120 to 250 cpm maximum. Can it be approved?

20 days ago I submitted the following logs, and also these are waiting for an approval:

#42121: A warning says "Invalid GPS location(s): 827 flagged by device."

In fact during the second half of the long trip along a highway (no obstacles!) the GPS data disappeared without apparent reasons. Now I have just learnt that the bGeige GPS receiver has to be reset frequently to avoid such anomalies...:-)

#42124: No warnings.

#42125: No warnings.

#42126: Warining: "A possible radiological anomaly. Max µSv/h: 0.93." There was no anomaly, in fact. The historical part of Orvieto, a town from the middle ages in centeral Italy, was built with quite "hot" stones...

#42127: Warning: "Invalid GPS location(s): 139 flagged by device." Same strange problem with GPS receiver instability: it stopped working after about one hour when we appoached Perugia (wide countryside landscape around, no high obstacles). So most of the trip up to Torino (several hours more) was lost.

Is there something else I can do?

Thanks and best regards.

Alberto

Same here,
I have 43 logs waiting for approval.
When i asked a questions all they did was a change in the website so you can't see anymore how much logs there are waiting...
Strange, because data is all what this project is about...

Please remember that Safecast is a volunteer run non-profit striving to maintain the highest standards. We approve hundreds of logs every day, by hand. We also flag many logs each day that are problematic for a variety of reasons - we do this to ensure that when someone accesses the Safecast Dataset they can be assured the quality and reliability is consistent.

Alberto asked:
"Is there something else I can do?

Yes, several things:

- Be patient. First and foremost, please remember this is volunteer run and significantly time consuming. We are working as fast as we can.

- Help us locate old drives that might be lost. If you have a drive that has been waiting more than a month, letting us know the exact drive (provide a link to it) will help us find it and see what the issue is. Only telling us you have old drives waiting actually creates more work because someone has to go find out who you are and what your account is and then search through all your logs to find ones that aren’t approved - which slows things down even further.

- We are working on software solutions to speed things up - if you are a software engineer and want to volunteer to help on the project please look at our github account and jump on some outstanding issues. This is the thing we need the most help with and the thing that would be most beneficial. If you aren’t an engineer, but you know others who are, please point them our direction.

- Donate. As we continue to grow we’re working to build up paid staff and hire people to solve problems, being able to pay people for their time goes a lone way towards speeding up the work that is done - as a non-profit we rely completely on donations from people and foundations. Many companies will do donation matching with their employees, if your companies offer this please consider it - a little goes a long way for us.

Thanks again.

Sean,

I'm not mad or so, just a bit impatient ;-).
We all pay at least 600 dollars to support the project, so i like to see some progress.

You say:

If i look at this https://api.safecast.org/en-US/bgeigie_imports?by_status=submitted&locale=en-US link i see all waiting logs (unless there are more we can't see...).

These are mine:

I didn't get any mails asking for an explanation or an action from my side, do you want a separate link to those logs?

Once again, I like this project a lot. It's nice to do a thing for the community.

Cheers,

Gerard

Hi Gerard-

"I'm not mad or so, just a bit impatient ;-).

I understand, but as I said below, you’ll need to be patient.

"We all pay at least 600 dollars to support the project, so i like to see some progress.”

This is an important point that needs so clarification - a bGeigie Nano costs around $600 because that is the deal we’ve been able to partner with providers to get the parts for. If this was a retail device it would cost around $3000. So the $600 you spend doesn’t go to “support the project” it goes to buy the parts that you received. If you thought the money was going to support the project I can understand why you might be impatient, but unfortunately that’s not the case.

That said, as I noted before - we’re working and approving things every single day, so progress is being made even if you don’t see it.

The “all waiting logs” link you provided is misleading, as the vast majority of those are not in fact waiting to be approved.

The link to your logs does in fact show all of your logs. If there is a specific log that you think has been waiting for a very long time and should have been approved but wasn’t, please send that link specifically - however best to send it directly and not to the mailing list so as not to flood people with emails that are not related to them.

Thanks!

In your reference to where work needs to be done on API code, are reference to which projects to look at and a list of things that have been identified as needing to be improved would go a long way. There are several projects in there and it is difficult to know how they are related and what is still active.

All the tasks for server-side work live in https://github.com/safecast/safecastapi/issues.

I try to keep the "help wanted" label curated with a handful of good starter tasks. https://github.com/Safecast/safecastapi/issues/527 is probably most on-topic for this conversation.

If you or anyone you know is interested in helping https://github.com/safecast/safecastapi/wiki has an overview and the "Dev:" wiki pages describe how to set up the app on common operating systems. We're also happy to help across slack or our weekly video chats.

Hope that helps!

Hi Sean,

I am absolutely not in a hurry. And I do quite well appreciate and understand what it means to carry on such an activity on a volunteer basis, something that I admire; what you and all your team is doing is just great.

I was only wondering if something wrong in my data prevented it to be accepted. For instance, just now I have seen that import #40098 (filename 27970000.log; https://api.safecast.org/en-US/bgeigie_imports/40098) was still pending because I forgot to add the metadata. Shame on me!..:-)

About locating the drives, sorry but I erroneously thought the import ID numbers were sufficient. Here are the links:

Unfortunately I am a hardware engineer without software experience, hence I cannot help you on that side. But I have already given Safecast's coordinates to several colleagues.

Donation: of course!

Thanks and best regards,

Alberto
