sligthly OT question - what about central database of nuclear facilities / NPPs and uranium mining / waste sites?

Hi,
some time ago I needed some geodata containing positions of NPPs etc. in particular countries and found out there is no "universal" open dataset.

1) Would you think it would be useful to build such geodatabase?

I can provide a lot of the data to start with, from good sources and under totally free license and maybe the users could help to expand it. I also have some data about uranium mines with various countries (I thinking about basic info only - mine type - open / underground, status - working, closed, remediated, deposit type and maybe some other information - I have geological education so I can help) + uranium etc. deposits. Could be just Google spreadsheet with defined structure which is easy to convert to some GIS readable format or to web app.

2) if answer to 1) is yes, would you like to include such data to the Tile Map?
Even without such implementation the open database itself would be really useful. It could provide quick explanation of higher values in some regions but could also attract "unwanted" attention to these sites...

3) even if you are not interested in it I would probably create something for my purposes and will share it later (but will need more time)

We used to have a layer like this on an old map that got lost in one of the updates along the way, I think it’s valuable and as long as  it’s publicly available data anyway I think it’s fine to include it..

OK,
thanks. I already prepared a file with some uranium mining sites and deposits:
(the access is currently read-only but I can later prepare some way to let users add new sites - at least with separate Google Spreadsheet + manual update)

Currently it only obtains sites in Australia (we had a discussion with friends and it started this dataset :-) ), some in Czech Republic and also few ones in Germany. I am working on adding there the sites mentioned in this article:

and also updating the Czech sites using a locally available data sources. The Safecast article mentioned above also lists the French sites so it should be possible to add them too (but will need some time to process the tables).

Similar dataset with nuclear power plants (and maybe also nuclear facilities and research reactors in future) will follow later.

regards

Jan

Hi,
I am also working on the nuclear reactors map - you can see current state here:

I am going to later combine the positions from the map with an attribute table mostly obtained from IAEA PRIS database (all sources are publicly available, there are no restricted data) and make the resulting dataset fully open and available. I am also thinking about creating a Google spreadsheet to make it possible for the users to submit new data, changes or comments.

Nice work, Jan!

Guessing if we every wanted to join it against measurement data having it as a postgis dump might be the best format. Or some sort of CSV we could load in w/o too much trouble.

If you were interested in trying I should be able to give you a dump of measurements in that format as well, though it'd probably take a couple hours to pull. The solarcast stuff has its own db you could connect to directly if you'd like, but still far fewer measurements there.

Hi,
I published this article on my blog:

Which I am going to update regularly until the dataset is finished. I also added the two research reactors in Netherlands which Paul asked for and continuing with the others and my plan is to also add reactors not present in the PRIS database - e.g. KLDR, Iraq, Israel and others.

I currently have two separate datasets - one is the Google map and second is the "attribute table". After merging the result will definitely be also in CSV.

Hi Jan,

Good effort, keep it coming!

BTW, you can use (still available) Google Fusion Tables as a simple
visualization tool. once you have a CSV file with locations and may be
some attributes (country, number_of_reactors, year_started,
year_stopped, output...).
It allows you to keep the data open/visible and sharable.

There are some public datasets as well, e.g.
https://fusiontables.google.com/DataSource?docid=1r4xzYttoGpS9QThE57_GWmApWlAnrdaVBStGjPY#rows:id=1
https://fusiontables.google.com/DataSource?docid=1NaKe4jNk3XEzX3Qgn_2Bi2nQorGdYS9opPTLc3w#rows:id=1

Search more on https://research.google.com/tables?corpus=fusion

There is nothing really specific in the format of the data, so you can
keep a CSV (up/down-loadable), but add some visualizations to it in
the fusion tables.

Cheers,
Kalin.

Do you mind if I use this data in a project I'm working on? I can share with you data that I have as well.

Dear Jon,
feel free to use the data if you do not mind the dataset is still not completed. I am adding US research reactors now and I remember from Europe the research reactors from many countries are still missing (needs some more time).

Hi,
after a longer time I finally released some data here:

so feel free to use them. I am also working on second dataset with research reactors - I hope I will release some version in next days.

Meanwhile I am also updating the uranium mines data - I have some data about French uranium mines so I hope to add them soon.

its a bit scary to see all this reactors on the map, would be interesting to make a layover to see how the measured radiation coresponds to the stationary nuclear Plants...

Hi,
I cannot load the Safecast interpolated layer in the GIS app but we did plenty of measurements close to nuclear power plants and there is simply nothing to measure - just natural background.

You would have better luck with the uranium mines - we have several sites related to uranium mining and there are often visibly higher dose rate values.

Examples:

Příbram mining dumps

Jáchymov

Rožná

and others...

i think this will be harder in future, when nations like sweden provide the drop and forget solution for Nuclear waste...

Hi,
while spending some time at home (because of some ugly kind of flu) I managed to continue in updates of the uranium sites map:

I first took IAEA TECDOC 1842 as a source but later it made me to search in much more sources - especially for the location of the sites. In some cases it nicely fit with higher regions in Safecast Tile Map.

I am now finishing Bulgaria and Poland and plan to finish the sites in Europe first. Africa, Asia, Americas in future...

enjoy

Jan
