Below an appeal to be sent to the UN Secretary-General regardingUNRISD imminent closure

H.E. Mr Ban Ki-moon
Secretary-General
United Nations
New York

Dear Mr. Secretary-General,

We are writing to you as friends of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) who are extremely concerned about the imminent closure of this prestigious institution.

Through a global network of development specialists, particularly from developing countries, UNRISD has fostered cutting edge research on key social development issues over the past 50 years. Seminal examples include its research on social indicators, social exclusion, inequality and women’s empowerment. Moreover, UNRISD has shaped policy discourse and practice, with significant contributions on sustainable development, universal social protection, care work, financing public goods, equitable political representation and the peaceful resolution of conflict. UNRISD is thus uniquely positioned to provide analytical, policy and advocacy support to the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

As you are aware, UNRISD has undertaken proactive and unconventional steps to secure institutional core funding, as well to mobilize project financing. This has included urgent appeals for funding from “old” and “new” donors, as well as from individuals. Several donors are making their financial support contingent on other sources of finance coming on stream. Mobilizing financial resources from alternative donor countries, foundations or individuals needs a grace period. Furthermore, funding from the UN regular budget would call for a series of consultations with member states of the Fifth Committee. At this moment in time, UNRISD reserves are exhausted.

Our appeal to you, Mr. Secretary-General, is to provide political support to UNRISD; and specifically to make available bridge funding from unencumbered resources in the UN system. As a remarkably cost-effective organization, attested by independent evaluations of the Institute, a relatively small amount of funding could go a long way in stabilizing UNRISD, and unlocking funding from donors.

This would enable UNRISD to continue its work and help push forward the 2030 Agenda, which was developed and adopted under your guidance. Most immediately, it would enable the Institute to present its pertinent research and analysis to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2016. From there, UNRISD would be enabled to launch a renewed round of resource mobilization.

As mentioned at the outset, we are friends of UNRISD. We are also allies of the UN system and advocates of the UN’s role in producing and disseminating evidence-based research. We therefore hope your Office will extend the necessary political support needed to mobilize both UN and other funding to UNRISD.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Friends,
I am writing from Sri Lanka for the first time . I need a big favour from you all.

The Muslim law of our country allows a Muslim girl to be married at the age of 12 where as for all the other communities its 18. We women are trying to lift it to 18 years of age. Currently a newspaper is taking public survey about it online.

It's in Tamil. however you can scroll down until you see an option  VOTE NOW" 12 years or 18 years and vote". Pleeeeease take a minute to vote and save the life of many little girls.

Thanks to all of you in Advance.

warm regards,
Hasanah.
