Dear feminists,

(with apologies for cross-posting)

I am reaching out to ask for your support in urging the government of Bangladesh to end the ongoing violent crackdown on students and protesters, and to end the curfew and communications blackout (internet and mobile networks have been off since Friday). The police and the ruling party vigilantes (Chhatra League) have killed over 150 students and protesters, mostly by shooting at them from a distance on orders from the government to 'shoot on sight'. The curfew restrictions are having a deadly effect: for instance, journalist Zulkarnain Saer reported yesterday (22 July) that blood banks are almost empty, and the curfew and conflict are preventing donors from coming in, resulting in preventable deaths of the injured.

Please see here at this link an open letter for use with any and all advocacy contacts you may have. There is a sign on form too, and the letter will be updated periodically adding on signatory names.

dispatch from photojournalist Shahidul Alam asked for the "scale of the brutal violence against student protests in Bangladesh be widely shared", while an urgent appeal sent from Dr Muhammad Yunus has asked for international support from world leaders and the United Nations. And in keeping with these and other messages from the student leaders asking for global support and solidarity, I request everyone to reach out to member states and agencies as soon as possible, to urge them to make statements against these human rights violations, or to privately communicate with the government to stop, whatever works. I hope those of you with shared contacts could coordinate with each other, but I also hope that if multiple messages reach the same individuals, the urgency would also be conveyed.
