[02] Cyprus - Varosha - UN - Protest

Nicosia, Dec 7 (CNA) - The UN have frequently protested to the Turkish
military authorities in Turkish occupied Cyprus in connection with moves
made in violation of the status quo of the fenced area of Famagusta,
Varosha, on the east of the island, UN spokeswoman Sarah Russell told CNA
today.

She also said some of the UN protests were taken into consideration and
acted upon but others went unheeded, adding that the UN has had several
contacts with the government of Cyprus on Varosha, the fenced area of the
city of Famagusta which has remained uninhabited since the 1974 Turkish
invasion and occupation of part of the island.
