As SADTU in KZN and as a responsible trade union with its adopted Vision 2030 we have to carry out the mandate of delivering on the 5 pillars of the Union's Vision 2030.
In February as KZN we visited most of poor performing schools to see how can we intervene - the most schools we visited were in rural areas especially Obonjeni.
In the same month we met with SMT members in almost all our Regions trying to assist them on management issues including curriculum management.
In May we launched Subject Societies through our Curtis Kondo Teacher Development Institute, and all the stakeholders were part of that. Societies assist on teacher development issues. These societies also exist in regions.
SADTU KZN has successfully conducted CAPS workshop since last year. Our structures are moving with our QLTP. Three weeks back we have conducted a workshop on Assessment. Our members have been working on weekends and offered extra classes especially for Matric.
In 2011 we started producing Matric preparatory material, which was adopted by the department and was circulated to almost all schools with Grade 12. The same has been done this year. We are using union resources to produce these booklets for maths, physics, maths lit, life sciences, and other subjects including accounting, history and geography.
All this is done because as a revolutionary trade union we understand our revolutionary task in the society. Our Vision talks of SADTU CREATING A LEARNING NATION. It also says a lot about Teacher Development, as well as other pillars. All the programmes above were in implementation of the Vision.
But as we do this, we don't have to forget the role of a trade union - that of ensuring better working conditions for members, we have to continue negotiating and demanding the best for the membership.
We are not going on strike, and that is not even on our agenda these days but there is a litany of issues that we must be able to deal with. Like the issue of GARNISHEEs, THANDILE (incapacity leave applications and medical boarding application which are always turned down) as our members are paying thousands of rands as a result of Leave Without Pay, ECD salaries, AET salaries and these workers are still paid on wrong tariffs, Payment of 37 % in lieu of benefits by FETC councils, recognition of qualifications for clerks, that clerks be moved to notch 6, rural allowance and that those who will not make it in Matric this year be allowed to repeat next year.
But as a responsible SADTU we said we don't want to disrupt exams and classes. That is why we decided to march on a Saturday which is something that has never happened in time immemorial.
All this is in line with SADTU’s Pillar 1: SERVICING UNION MEMBERS.
All in all the march will be in appreciation of the progress made by the government, and then raise what we feel needs to be done moving forward, which will also assist in realising Schooling 2025 and its Action Plan - unlike the counter-revolutionary unions and political parties which want to rubbish every good deliverables done by our government.
