Study realistic Painting and Drawing in our beautiful San Francisco studio: High ceilings, natural light, master instructors.

Sadie Valeri Atelier is a beautiful, friendly environment for focused study of Classical Realism Painting and Drawing.

We offer teaching methods passed down from the Renaissance through the 19th century, methods which put the skills of the past into the hands of today’s artists.

All levels are welcome! From beginners who love art and drawing but who have not had formal training, to experienced artists who want to gain a more solid grasp of fundamental principles, historical training methods lead to significant skill development within a few months of training. 

Classes, Workshops and Intensives:

“Atelier” is the traditional French term for an art studio, and the word has come to be synonymous with the current resurgence of 19th century methods of art training. 

8 Flexible Intro Sessions or One Day Intro
Designed for students who need a flexible schedule to attend classes. New students can start any time for an introduction to the Fundamentals of Classical drawing and painting. One-Day Intro is a great way to see the studio and get a feel for our instruction.

Monthly Enrollment (Full Time or Part Time)
Enroll at the studio for a monthly fee to study Classical drawing and painting Part Time or Full Time, with access to selected portrait and figure model sessions for free. Enrolled students can also register for select additional classes at a discount. New students are accepted year-round.

The Atelier hosts intensive Workshops designed to be an immersive experience for short-term periods of study.

Skill Levels
Traditional methods are an excellent foundation for beginners, and experienced artists will significantly advance their skills with these time-tested techniques. Our classes are for adults and mature teens.

An introduction to the fundamental building blocks of Classical methods, with the option to focus on Drawing or Painting. This series of introductory classes are the first lessons introduced in Sadie’s Still Life Painting and Drawing and Cast Drawing classes. They are also an excellent preparation for all of our Figure classes. Flex classes are offered several times er week, and students can attend any 8 sessions within 2 months.

Sadie teaches the painting technique she uses for her own still lifes: The layered,Indirect method of oil painting developed by the Dutch Masters of 17th century. This method of applying many thin layers of oil paint on a smooth wood panel gives the artist incredible control for achieving effects of stunning realism.

Reserve a Station for Part Time Study
with Sadie Valeri

Students who want to work on a cast drawing or still life painting over the course of several sessions have the opportunity to reserve a workstation for one or more days per week, with stable lighting and access the reserved station all day.

All our students are guided through a progressive series of exercises designed to build confidence and mastery at every stage before moving on to more complex projects. This rigorous and thorough method of training is designed to emulate the training curriculum of the 19th century French Academic Method.

Elizabeth Zanzinger: Long Pose Figure Drawing: Inside Out, Outside In

We are honored to host Guest Instructor Elizabeth Zanzinger, former student of Juliette Aristides and the Grand Central Atelier.

In this six session class, students will come away with a deeper understanding of figure drawing and the principles that help guarantee success. Starting with a solid fail-proof approach, students will then couple their direct observation from life with their study of anatomy and structure. We will have fun exploring the medium of white chalk and Nitram vine charcoal and learn how to use it to our advantage with the figure.

Felicia Forte: Alla Prima Portrait Painting and Portrait Drawing: Jan-May 2015

Wednesday Evenings, 6:30 - 9:30pm Jan-May 2015

$220/month, based on a four week month, new students register for two months at a time.

In This class students may choose to draw or paint. If you choose to draw: Felicia teaches a tonal style of drawing that lend’s itself to learning representational painting. Painting: in direct painting, also known as alla prima, a work is completed in a single session while the paint is still wet. Direct Painting is a stimulating method which teaches you to be present in every brush stroke, focusing on only the essentials, ultimately teaching you great dexterity and control.

WORKSHOP: Felicia Forte: Alla Prima Portrait Painting 

3 Days 10am - 5pm

January 28-30, 2015

Over the three days of this workshop we will practice a series of exercises designed to illustrate the fundamentals: value study in black and white, quick sketch portrait painting. Finally these exercises will culminate in painting the model using the Zorn palette, a muted version of a primary color palette, allowing you ease in color harmony. I will demonstrate each day of class as well as offer each student personal critique and advice.

Learn some new tricks from award winning still life painter, Katherine Stone. Kate will share her four-step process for paint layering and her methodology for creating a work of art that will not yellow, delaminate, crack or peel. With the help of a slideshow of close up photos of her own work, Kate will also share her techniques for creating textural and optical effects.

Daily practice is the best way for an artist to significantly improve their skills, but many serious students of Realism are unable to attend a full-time program year-round. That’s why we offer the opportunity to study at the atelier for short-term, full time Intensives.

Students can choose one or more weeks of study, full days or half days, consecutively or throughout the year, to build their own ideal program. All with exceptional instructors who share their extensive knowledge of realistic painting and drawing.

Intensive study is designed to be as flexible as possible to accommodate different schedules and lengths of study.

Felicia Forte: Private Instruction

 This is a class or course of classes specifically tailored to the individual needs and goals of each student. One-on-one instruction provides the student intensive technical training with immediate feedback and guidance. The focus is on developing the particular talents and skills unique to each artist.
Classes are held in Felicia’s Mission neighborhood studio, Monday through Friday in the morning hours in three hour blocks. Email to inquire about weekend availability. 
The fee for private instruction is $75.00 an hour, plus model fee if applicable.
