An introduction to the fundamental building blocks of Classical methods, with the option to focus on Drawing or Painting
Student painting, Second year Part timeFlex Sessions are an excellent way for new students to get an introduction to the basics of classical drawing and painting, and returning students are also welcome to take advantage of this more flexible format.
Six daytime sessions are offered per week with Still Life, Portrait, or Figure as the subject:
Tue: 12:30-3:30 - Still Life Drawing or Painting
Wed: 12:30-3:30 - Portrait Model: Drawing or Painting, 3 hr pose
Thurs: 12:30-3:30 - Still Life Drawing or Painting
Sat: 10am-1pm - Still Life Drawing or Painting
Sun: 10am-1pm - Still Life Drawing or Painting
Sun: 1:30-4:30 - Figure Model: Drawing, 20min-3hr poses
Students can choose whether to focus on drawing or painting, however all new students start with drawing for at least the first 2 sessions. The Sunday Figure session is drawing only.
Still Life Drawing and Painting
Drawing exercises sharpen perceptual skills using classical 19th century French academic methods, and Sadie’s oil painting exercises prepare the student to approach painting with confidence. Take-home handouts and access to video clips can fuel further self-study at home.
Each student is guided through a progressive series of exercises designed to build confidence and mastery at every stage before moving on to more complex projects.
Students work from 19th century prints, still life objects and casts (casts are white plaster reproductions of sculptures). It takes at least 8 sessions to complete the beginning drawing or painting exercises. Exercises can be worked on at home as well.
Portrait and Figure Sessions:
Model Sessions are an excellent way to practice the techniques introduced in the Still Life class. Beginners will focus on drawing using the straight-line Block-In method. Students who wish to paint the Portrait model will work at least a few sessions with monochromatic (burnt umber) paint. There is less one-on-one instruction in these sessions, they are an opportunity to practice alongside advanced student assistants who run the sessions and demonstrate. Sadie will occasionally demonstrate as well.
Ongoing Study
Once the 8 sessions are complete students can continue to sign up for Flex sessions or they can enroll to reserve a station for weekly study. At reserved stations students can create multi-session cast drawings and/or still life paintings under stable conditions with consistent lighting. Enrolled students can also attend our Figure and Portrait classes at a discounted rate. Click here to read about our curriculum of study in Monthly Enrollment
