Sadie teaches the painting technique she uses for her own still lifes: The layered, Indirect method of oil painting developed by the Dutch Masters of 17th century. This method of applying many thin layers of oil paint on a smooth wood panel gives the artist incredible control for achieving effects of stunning realism.

“Casts” are plaster reproductions of historic sculptures, and studying them was the standard for art education in the 19th century French Academic tradition.
Students start with a series of graphite pencil drawing exercises designed to develop the perception of values (dark and light) and proportion (height, width and shape), using 19th-century academic methods.

Everyone can tell when a figure drawing is out of proportion: Head too big, legs too short, arms too long…. Even a non-artist will spot the errors immediately. Distort your shapes beyond the range of reasonable proportion and your figure drawing starts to look more alien than human! So, we can tell what wrong…. now, how how to fix it?
Felicia Forte: Portrait Drawing: Monthly Ongoing
Monday Evenings, 6:30 - 9:30pm

Students in this class will draw from the model in a progression of poses that will start with quick sketch using charcoal on newsprint and end in a nine hour drawing using graphite on archival paper. This progression will repeat twice a year, once January-May and next September-December, but a new student can join in at anytime when a space is available, the fundamentals repeat each week. Some of the quicksketch sessions will include figure as well as portrait. Felicia teaches a tonal style of drawing that lend’s itself to learning representational painting. In this class you will discuss and practice different strategies for accomplishing your goals. Felicia will challenge you to correctly observe and record the fundamentals: shapes, values, and edges.
Felicia Forte: Alla Prima Portrait Painting: Ongoing Monthly
Wednesday Evenings, 6:30 - 9:30pm

In Direct Painting, also known as Alla Prima, a work is completed in a single session while the paint is still wet. Direct Painting is a stimulating method which teaches you to be present in every brush stroke, focusing on only the essentials, ultimately teaching you great dexterity and control. In this class you will discuss and practice different strategies for accomplishing your goals. Felicia will challenge you to correctly observe and record the fundamentals: shapes (drawing) values, edges and color, while at the same time encourage you to develop your own language of abstraction. Felicia may give you special exercises and drills based on the needs of the class and the individual.

Over the four days of this workshop we will practice a series of exercises designed to illustrate the fundamentals: monochromatic study, value study in black and white, quick sketch portrait painting. Finally these exercises will culminate in painting the model using the Zorn palette, a muted version of a primary color palette, allowing you ease in color harmony. I will demonstrate each day of class as well as offer each student personal critique and advice.
WORKSHOP: Kate Stone: Textural and Optical Effects in Still Life Painting

Learn some new tricks from award winning still life painter, Katherine Stone. Kate will share her four-step process for paint layering and her methodology for creating a work of art that will not yellow, delaminate, crack or peel. With the help of a slideshow of close up photos of her own work, Kate will also share her techniques for creating textural and optical effects.

We are honored to welcome Iliya Mirochnik, trained at the Repin Academy and winner of First Place award at Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition.
This workshop explores a direct painting approach to capturing a likeness and composing a portrait. Participants will paint either a portrait head study, or a study with hands. The focus will be on developing an exciting composition and exaggerating various elements within the portrait to express the character of the sitter as well as the artist’s relationship to him or her.
