To master the fundamentals of drawing and painting, it is critical to have a clear understanding of how light behaves on a simple form: The Sphere.
In these lessons artist Sadie Valeri demonstrates how to draw and paint a realistic sphere. Sadie clearly explains the fundamental principles of light on form, principles which can be applied to any subject.
Detailed instructions are offered for every step, from sharpening a pencil and drawing a precise contour, to creating a believable illusion with refined painting techniques.
Painting the Value Sphere is an excellent introduction to the Indirect, layered method of oil painting Sadie uses to create her award-winning still lifes. Two types of underpainting are introduced: Open Grisaille, which uses a single color of transparent paint for a first layer of values, and then Closed Grisaille, which is painted using a whole range of black, white, and grayscale paint to create masterfully rendered form.
The videos also include free printable handouts, notes and materials lists, which can be used as additional reference and instruction while creating your own drawings and paintings.
Both video are useful for artists of all levels: An accessible introduction to drawing for a beginner and also a useful review of fundamental concepts for advanced artists who would like to brush up on the basics.
