Question: What are the obstacles in being a well-wisher of all?
Swamiji: Selfishness is the main obstacle. As such, selfishness is due to ego (self-identity), By giving up selfishness and (having the sentiment of) seeing to the well-being of all, our own well-being takes place ! He who has the feeling - "May all be happy," such a person is taken care off even by the animals.
Question: You say that all activities e.g. worship of God, meditation, various spiritual practices, all should be done for the benefit of others. If this is true, then one has to believe that so far no one person's spiritual practice has been perfected, since so far all have not attained salvation?
Swamiji: The important point here is not everyone's salvation, supreme well-being, as much as, renouncing / giving up one's selfishness. As such, no one is able to help another person in attaining salvation. But certainly all are entitled and can definitely give up selfishness. Having the feeling of well-being of all is a spiritual discipline based on inner feelings (bhava), it is not the end in itself.
Question: Placing aside one's own well-being, and not thinking about our own salvation, why must we think of other's well-being?
Swamiji: Having the feeling that - "Let me attain salvation" is self-centered, which will become a major obstacle in attaining salvation. The more things that we do for the benefit of others, our own selfishness will decrease and eventually it will be wiped out. The extent that our selfishness decreases / is wiped out, to that extent we will be benefited. (spiritually).
Question: On seeing a person unhappy, feeling sorry for them etc., tends to establish a relation with them. Then how can we be free from bondage?
Swamiji: This relationship is not one that will get us entangled. When we are saddened by the sorrow of others, then it is to be understood that we may have something with us that rightfully belongs to that person. Take that thing and use it for their service.
