You are correct as far as the pracice and belief is concerned .Lord Vinayaka is also known as vignaharta we invoke his blessings at the beginning in  our rituals .  In vaishnava cult there is ganesh and only they recognise thumbikkai alzhwar. In vishnu sahasranamam the opening  sentence
ATHA DHYANAM is

Shuklam-baradharam Vishnum shashivarnam chaturbhujam |

Prasanna vadanam dhyayet sarva vighnopa-shantaye ||

The slokam is interpreted in different way too

Dualistic & Non-dualistic meaning of shuklambaradharam shlokam

Aum

Dualistic way of thinking (commonly uttered to Lord Ganapati)

Shuklambaradharam vishnum
Shashivarnam chaturbhujam
Prasanna vadanamdhyayet
Sarva vighnopashantaye

Attired in white and all-pervading,
O moon-hued, four-shouldered One
with smiling face so pleasing,
upon You we meditate
for removing all obstacles.

Now let us look into the word to word meaning of this shlokam (along with non-dualistic view):

Shukla = pure, spotless, bright, white

Ambara = garment, sky

Dhara = holding, bearing, wearing

Vishnum = all pervading, lord Vishnu, ever conscious

Shashi = moon, white, pure (as a verb it is ever changing and ever new, eternally youthful)

Varnam = hue, color

Shashi varnam= every object (human beings, plants, all animals, all stellar bodies (including Planets, asteroids, suns, stars, comets, black holes, white dwarfs etc.) In this cosmos including the empty space or absolute void (shunya) is hued with that tinge of purity

Chatur = four

Bhuja = hand, arm, branch, abscissa (geom.) = The value of a coordinate on the horizontal axis,chaturbhuja = four coordinates of the axes – which means, three coordinates x, y, z and the fourth coordinate is time. Omnipresent and ever conscious through all times – bhoota (past) vartamAna (present) and bhavisyat (future).

Prasanna = pleasing, tranquil, pure, serene

Vadanam = face, space

Prasannavadanam = that space (whole cosmos or vishvam) which is full of tranquility, serene, stillness and eternal silence – with full of Love.

Dhyayet = meditate

Sarva = all, whole

Vighna = difficulty, hurdle, obstacle

Upa = towards, into, lead to, near

Shantaye = (lead to) shanty or bliss

Non-dualistic or advaitaway of thinking:

Oh pure, spotless, all pervading, ever conscious One; covering everything in the cosmos, holding the cosmos with serenity, tranquility (Love), all over (omnipresent) and through all times; having a pure space (face) (internal as well as eternal space with stillness and eternal silence), we meditate upon You so that you make us whole by removing all our obstacles (which are illusory obstacles) and merge us into or make us one with that infinite bliss or may we attain Self Realization.

How you or common man followers of different cult interpret ?
