"Gundamma Katha" is an epoch in Telugu cinema. I am sure it came in Tamil also (and might have even preceded the Teulgu version.) By today, the movie finishes 50 years since it was released.

The above is link to a lovely song. It is "duet" with the hero & heroine cruising in a topless/convertible car. Though involving hero and heroine, it is not a usual "duet" and a far cry from the unspeakable lyrics.

It is a delight to watch and listen - beautiful visuals, excellent lyrics (a philosophical comment on the tendencies of 'modern' man), soulful tune and rendition (master piece by Ghantasaala and P Leela).

Worth watching even if you do not understand Telugu.

Gundamma Katha was an adaptation of B Vithalaacharya's Kannada film story which was given by Acharya to B Nagireddy as a good gesture. Chakrapani and D V Narasaraju brought several changes to the original.

Gundamma's husband appeared  in the original story. According to Chakrapani, if a husband cannot speak before his wife, his role has no meaning. Hence he dropped that husband's character in the modified version.

Kamalakara Kameshwara Rao, famous for mythological film scripts, carried this film on his shoulders.

Since two heroes were taken, care should be taken with the script, number of songs to each etc. There is an unwanted dance show by L Vijayalakshmi in the film. Critics questioned its necessity. Chakrapani replied: 'it is there for seeing'. Chakrapani knew the pulse of viewer.

Once some critic asked Chakrapani: Sir, what message you are giving through your films?
For that Chakrapani replied: Oh! a so-much-spent film for a message? For that, will  not a telegram do?

His best writer Pingali carried Chakrapani's message in the film Patala Bhairavi:

SVR tells Padmanabham: 'we must present what people demand, and what we show should be liked by people'

50 years over...still Gundammakatha's re-make a doubt without an equal to Suryakantam!
