Dear Sir,
I just now went thro your experience of climbing the 800 steps of Palani hills on foot with the knees afflicted by Arthritis to an extent that even a single floor is climbed using a lift.
Truly inspiring.
Recently in a mail in this group tilted 'Kanchi Mahaswamigal & Ariyakkudi' periyava has said that "In Ramayana Sage Viswamitra tells the story of Subhramanya to Shri Rama and Shri Lakshmana"
In your mail, you have mentioned that |
|
Dandapani has endorsed his promise in His form as Krishna.
|
the ever blissful Maadhava and He is also the Dandaayuthapani.
|
It is very very pleasing to see my Priya, Ishta deivam - Shri Subhramanya as Krishna & Madhava and the one about whom Shri Rama & Shri Lakshmana learnt from Sage Viswamitra. I see my lord in a new dimension now.
There is a Tamil song that elders have taught me to recite when ever I am in a state of worry or fear.
"Anju mugam thondril, arum mugam thondrum
Vensamaril anjel ena vel thondrum
Nenjil oru kal ninaikkil irukalum thondrum
Muruga - ena oduvar mun."
You thought of him once (Nenjil Oru kal ninaikkil) and strength appeared in both your legs. (irukalum thondrum)
Humbly yours
Rajagopalan.

Dear Baloo,
Thankyou for the full words and meanings.
I knew that any subject on Lord Muruga would spur you into action.
Regarding the song by Nakkeerar,
It is a sledai - Dual meanings can be read into it.
Nakkerrar is such a talented and blessed person that one can see more than two meanings in them. |
|
Anju mugam thondrin Aaru mugam thondrum
|
1. Whenever one has the fear-stricken face, Aarumugam (Six faced Lord Muruga) appears before.
2. If you read Aaru mugam as 'Aarudhalai tharuginra mugam', (as the face that gives consolation) then the meaning can be "Whenever one has the fear-stricken face, the face of Muruga that gives consolation appears before". (Aaruthalai tharuginra mugam thondrum.) |
|
Venjamaril anjal ena vel thondrum
|
1. Even when one is put in to the fire, Vel (hand weapon of Lord Muruga) appears as protection (Abhay)
2. The word 'Samar' in Tamil, is also used to denote conflict or war. Vensamar is fierce conflict. If you read the meaning of Vensamar accordingly, then the meaning can be "When you are faced with fierce conflict / war, Vel (hand weapon of Lord Muruga) appears as protection (Abhay)." We can also extend the word samar to denote any conflicts that arise inside us and not necessarily a war. That is probably, the reason, why elders have adised us to recite this, whenever we have internal conflcits / worries. |
|
Nenjil Orukal ninaikkin iru kalum thondrum
|
1. When one thinks just once in his mind, Lord Muruga appears both day and night (iru kalam)
2. If you read Orukal as Orukkal, it means 'If at all'. Then the meaning becomes "If at all one thinks (of Lord Muruga), Lord Muruga appears both day and night (iru kalam)"
3. You can read Iru kalum as 'both feet' also. Then the meaning becomes "When one thinks just once in his mind, both the holy feet (of Lord Muruga) appears."
The combination of the dual meanings of both the words (oru kal & Iru kalum) will totally give four meanings to these lyrics.
I personaly like to use it that way, (Both feet instead of both times) as it is my passion to perform Manasa pooja for the holy feet of Lord muruga internally. It is in this context that I read the meaning of the IIIrd stanza in the mail that 'strength appeared in both the legs', because the feet that climbed the holy hills of Palani after thinking of Lord Muruga once in the mind, were that of Lord Muruga himself.
I realise that in reading such meanings into the song, I am probably not confirming to the strict literary norms, but that is the liberty I take with my lord Muruga.
Thank you baloo for bringing this up. I am aware of the deep devotion you have for Lord Muruga.
