to me

Friends,   I just wanted to share with you all a very sweet experience.
When I was young and my father was alive, and for ever so many pervious years before that it was a practice or rather a holy vow in our family to take a Kavadi to Pazhani (Palni) where the ever merciful Dhandayuthapani, the young recluse, Murugan, is present.  This is during thaipoosam. I have been going to Palni from the age of five to about forty (and I am nearly sixty now). Then my father passed away and I could not fulfil the vow and from 2002 to 2011 I have never gone to visit Dandapani. Meanwhile my right knee has got ruined practically from gout and arthritis and even to reach the first floor of my office at Trivandrum or Kollam I had to use the  lift and often the shoulders of my friends. The loss of connection with Pazhani Andavar was very painful. Ultimately I decided to go to Him and I reached on a short Visit to  Palni yesterday.  It is Khatri (agni nakshatra--karthika jnaattuvela time and it is the hottest time of the year.. karthika being ruled by agni.). I thought I could reach the Hill temple using winch but the crowd was impossible. So I decided to climb the steps and once that decision was made, I was able to do it.  I climbed up the 400 odd steep steps, stood in the queue for a long period and had the Darshan of my Swami.  I retraced my way down also by foot.  For a normal healthy person this is not anything special.  But a man with a ruined knee doing this and feeling not much of difficulty during the climb and even afterwards, is nothing short of miracle.  It is a only His Sweet Grace . Dandapani has endorsed his promise in His form  as Krishna.
मूकं करोति वाचालं पङ्गुम् लङ्घयते गिरिं।
यत् कृपा तं अहं  वन्दे परमानद माधवं॥
mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅgum laṅghayate giriṁ|
yat kṛpā taṁ ahaṁ  vande paramānada mādhavaṁ||

"His Grace makes the dumb eloquent, He permits the lame   to cover  by foot the mountain... I bow to the storehouse of such Grace, the ever blissful Maadhava and He is also the Dandaayuthapani.

Dear Sir,

I just now went thro your experience of climbing the 800 steps of Palani hills on foot with the knees afflicted by Arthritis to an extent that even a single floor is climbed using a lift.

Truly inspiring.

Recently in a mail in this group tilted 'Kanchi Mahaswamigal & Ariyakkudi' periyava has said that "In Ramayana Sage Viswamitra tells the story of Subhramanya to Shri Rama and Shri Lakshmana"

In your mail, you have mentioned that

Dandapani has endorsed his promise in His form  as Krishna.

the ever blissful Maadhava and He is also the Dandaayuthapani.

It is very very pleasing to see my Priya, Ishta deivam - Shri Subhramanya as Krishna & Madhava and the one about whom Shri Rama & Shri Lakshmana learnt from Sage Viswamitra. I see my lord in a new dimension now.

There is a Tamil song that elders have taught me to recite when ever I am in a state of worry or fear.

"Anju mugam thondril, arum mugam thondrum
Vensamaril anjel ena vel thondrum
Nenjil oru kal ninaikkil irukalum thondrum
Muruga - ena oduvar mun."

You thought of him once (Nenjil Oru kal ninaikkil) and strength appeared in both your legs. (irukalum thondrum)

Humbly yours

Rajagopalan.

What a sharing Sir.

There is nothing nothing nothing that matches the
power of complete surrender to the Divine in all worlds and in all avasthaas.

Somehow, sadly, not all seem to be blessed to realize this truth.

You are truly blessed  Sir.

As Gopi Krishna had said it is blessing even to read all this
Sadgoshthi is blessed to have so many sharings like this.

My dear Raju,

Your response is touching.

The song! Where is it from?
You must promise me to sing that song to me next time we meet.

Grace is pouring indeed....

Sir,

I was thrilled and moved by the sharings.

Anju mugam thondrin aaru mugam thondrum.......- Truly favourite of all of us.

This song is from Thirumurugattrupadai written by Nakkeerar.

There is a small correction in Raju's understanding of the 3rd line (nenjil oru kal ninaikkin...)

I have given below the meaning of this song to the best of my understanding.

Anju mugam thondrin Aaru mugam thondrum
Whenever one has the fear-stricken face, Aarumugam (Six faced Lord Muruga) appears before.

       Venjamaril anjal ena vel thondrum
Even when one is put in to the fire, Vel (hand weapon of Lord Muruga) appears as protection (Abhay)

Nenjil Orukal ninaikkin iru kalum thondrum
When one thinks just once in his mind, Lord Muruga appears both day and night (iru kalam)

       Muruga endru odhuvar mun
In front of those who utter the name of Lord Muruga.

Thanks and  regards,
Baloo

Dear Baloo,

Thankyou for the full words and meanings.

I knew that any subject on Lord Muruga would spur you into action.

Regarding the song by Nakkeerar,

It is a sledai - Dual meanings can be read into it.

Nakkerrar is such a talented and blessed person that one can see more than two meanings in them.

Anju mugam thondrin Aaru mugam thondrum
1. Whenever one has the fear-stricken face, Aarumugam (Six faced Lord Muruga) appears before.

2. If you read Aaru mugam as 'Aarudhalai tharuginra mugam', (as the face that gives consolation) then the meaning can be "Whenever one has the fear-stricken face, the face of Muruga that gives consolation appears before". (Aaruthalai tharuginra mugam thondrum.)

Venjamaril anjal ena vel thondrum
1. Even when one is put in to the fire, Vel (hand weapon of Lord Muruga) appears as protection (Abhay)

2. The word 'Samar' in Tamil, is also used to denote conflict or war. Vensamar is fierce conflict. If you read the meaning of Vensamar accordingly, then the meaning can be "When you are faced with fierce conflict / war, Vel (hand weapon of Lord Muruga) appears as protection (Abhay)." We can also extend the word samar to denote any conflicts that arise inside us and not necessarily a war. That is probably, the reason, why elders have adised us to recite this, whenever we have internal conflcits / worries.

Nenjil Orukal ninaikkin iru kalum thondrum
1. When one thinks just once in his mind, Lord Muruga appears both day and night (iru kalam)

2. If you read Orukal as Orukkal, it means  'If at all'. Then the meaning becomes "If at all one thinks (of Lord Muruga),  Lord Muruga appears both day and night (iru kalam)"

3. You can read Iru kalum as 'both feet' also. Then the meaning becomes "When one thinks just once in his mind, both the holy feet (of Lord Muruga) appears."

The combination of the dual meanings of both the words (oru kal & Iru kalum) will totally give four meanings to these lyrics.

I personaly like to use it that way, (Both feet instead of both times) as it is my passion to perform Manasa pooja for the holy feet of Lord muruga internally.

It is in this context that I read the meaning of the IIIrd stanza in the mail that 'strength appeared in both the legs', because the feet that climbed the holy hills of Palani after thinking of Lord Muruga once in the mind, were that of Lord Muruga himself.

I realise that in reading such meanings into the song, I am probably not confirming to the strict literary norms, but that is the liberty I take with my lord Muruga.

Thank you baloo for bringing this up. I am aware of the deep devotion you have for Lord Muruga.

Raju.

Thanks Raju.
Your explanations are great.

Yes. Great poets write poems with a lot of meanings.
We need to raise ourselves to their plane to really understand.

Baloo
