Provide your students the installation link for LockDown Browser (this link is unique for each institution). If you don't have the URL for this page, visit the training resources within the LockDown Browser dashboard, or contact your institution's LMS administrator.

This course requires the use of LockDown Browser for online exams. Watch this short video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser and the optional webcam feature (which may be required for some exams).

To take an online test, start LockDown Browser and navigate to the exam. (You won't be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.) For additional details on using LockDown Browser, review this Student Quick Start Guide (PDF)

LockDown Browser is a client application that is installed to a local computer. Both the Windows edition and the Mac edition of the browser are based on Chromium, Google's open source framework. Students do NOT need Google's Chrome browser installed; nor will this version affect a Chrome browser that's already installed.

I'm wondering if anyone else is having an issue with New Quizzes and LockDown Browser? I was just called up to a classroom where an instructor was giving a quiz with LockDown Browser enabled and all the settings looked good to me, but all students were getting the robot "no access" image when trying to access. I tried enabling and re-enabling Lockdown but nothing worked. I eventually just had to tell him to turn off LockDown Browser so they could at least take the quiz, which is obviously not ideal.

I just created a new quiz in my test course and published it, and I get the same error message that all the students were getting with my test student account. I know LockDown does work with New Quizzes as I've tested this in the past.

"The robot error is not occurring in LockDown Browser. Rather, it's showing up in the standard browser being used to access the exam.
Canvas Support is aware of the problem, and they believe it may be caused by their assignment enhancements feature flag.
Our testing shows that disabling this setting (see attached photo) resolves the problem"

Students will get the robot error if they try to access LockDown Browser New Quiz through the "grades" instead of by going to the quizzes/assignments/modules are to access the quiz, I think. And instructors/admins can't use "Student View" or "Masquerade as...", or they get the same error.

We've been using assignment enhancements exclusively for at least a couple of years, and next week is finals week, so there's no way we can just turn off assignment enhancements. Hopefully, another fix will be found!

Hello, i am having problems using the lockdown browser for my exam on canvas. I have downloaded it and set it up, But every time i try to start my exam it says i need a lockdown browser. I watched many videos and it says i should enter the exam through the lockdown browser but i have not figured how to do that. If i press on the downloaded software it repeats the same steps to re-install it instead of navigating me to the exam.

Hello @w210477964 Welcome to the Canvas Community. Thank you for posting your question. My initial thought is...are you downloading the Lockdown Browser from Respondus' website? If so, it's my understanding that downloading the "generic" version of Lockdown Browser will not work. You need to be downloading Lockdown Browser using a specific link that your instructor should have given you. (See the first bullet point in the section "INSTALLING LOCKDOWN BROWSER".) The reason for this is that the specific link is tied to your school/course, and there is some kind of "connection" made on the back-end to say, "Yes, this is the approved Lockdown Browser, and yes, Raneem Siam can take the exam." So, I would recommend contacting your instructor to make sure that he/she is providing the link for you to download Lockdown Browser properly. You can use the "Ask Your Instructor a Question" link described in this Guide: How do I get help with Canvas as a student?. I hope this information is helpful to you. Good luck!

What file did you find it in? I am having the same problem and have not found any resolution. I had it last semester worked no issue with blackboard but since the switch to canvas I cannot use it. I have a MacBook Air.

The karabiner_elements app and it's other files can not be force quit by the lockdown browser. On the Activity Monitor on my mac it will allow me to press quit the karabiner processes but it will just come back and doesn't actually quit.

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment when taking an assessment in MyClasses. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading. Some faculty will also require the use of a WebCam while using LockDown Browser for student verification during online assessments.

Note: Faculty can link to any of these handouts in their course for reference. Faculty can also import LockDown Browser information for students directly into their MyClasses course using the Canvas Commons.

*It is important to note that First-Year/Transfers using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor for their ALEKS placement exam are using a proprietary system native to ALEKS. It is recommended these students (once they have completed their placement exams) run a fresh install of the tools for use within courses at Bradley University.

LockDown Browser is the "gold standard" for locking down a student's computer or iPad during an online exam. That's why 1500 universities rely on it to prevent cheating on 120 million exams each year. Respondus Monitor builds upon the LockDown Browser technology to ensure the computing device isn't used to cheat during a non-proctored exam.

After a quick one-time installation, Respondus Monitor will auto-launch from the student's browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE) whenever the exam settings require it. Students are then guided through a pre-exam sequence, including a webcam check. Students love the auto-launch capability, which is now available for most learning systems.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Folio. When students use the LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading.

LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking tests in Canvas. It prevents students from printing, copying, visiting another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. If a Canvas test requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Canvas tests. It should not be used in other areas of Canvas.

While the Respondus Lockdown Browser is a powerful tool for limiting access to online resources during tests, it does require a small amount of preparation to ensure a smooth experience for both instructors and students. Check out these quick tips to get started with the LockDown Browser and prepare your students.

The LockDown Browser is not compatible with iPhones or Android phones. Instructors may enable iPads as a testing platform on a per-test basis, however the Help Desk's capacity to assist with iPads for testing is limited.

The LockDown Browser is not distributed publicly. In order to access the browser, students must log into Blackboard and navigate to the Institution tab. A download link is published under the Blackboard Support section.

To ensure your first test using the LockDown Browser runs smoothly, have students take an ungraded practice quiz that requires the use of LockDown Browser. Ideally, have students use the same computers they'll later use with the graded quizzes, on their normal network/Wi-Fi environment. Leave the practice quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again if they need to test a different computer or Wi-Fi network.

The Respondus Lockdown Browser is available in all computer labs across the Galloway and Atlantic City campuses. However, these are a few quiet study areas which may provide a better test-taking environment:

If you plan to use either Lockdown or Monitor, please add the appropriate technology specifications to your syllabus. See the "syllabus language" post below on this page. Respondus provides such language with our University download link on the detailed resource pages on Canvas - see video under "setting up Lockdown". You also need to offer a practice quiz to ensure students work out any kinks before taking a graded assessment.
