Don't get me wrong.
I'm still very interested in Gcam, because I like more natural results than those provided by the stock camera.
On my old Redmi Note 7, with its lousy camera, Gcam provided amazing results.
But apparently it only works on phones other than the Pixel 7 or 7 pro.
None of the versions I've tried gave me satisfaction.
On most of them, the 3 sliders (WB, exposure, shadows-highlights) are either missing or not working. In fact, only the exposure slider works. The others, when they are present, modify the image in the viewfinder, but do not change the final result at all. With the original camera, I have my 3 sliders at my disposal, they work perfectly, and the result is always excellent.
The only area where Gcam is clearly superior is in certain conditions where the lighting is extremely low, and where Gcam, thanks to HDR advanced allows results that the original camera is incapable of.
But these are very exceptional conditions. In almost all cases, the original camera gives identical or better results, but allows to use the 3 sliders to taste
So I'll wait for the release of Gcam versions fully adapted to the Pixel 7.

When installing Gcam on a non Pixel camera, you get the Pixel 7 native app on a non Pixel 7 phone. But the app doesn't make the picture. Sensor size, lens, pixel size and density, pixel binning, etc. have a direct impact on image quality. That's why using Gcam, you can get better pictures with a Samsung or Xiaomi than with a Pixel 7.

First of all, you should forget about the idea that the official stock Google Camera app and Gcam mods are the same thing. The stock application gives you the chance to take photos only within the limits set by Google, and this is mostly no different from any brand's stock camera application. However, Gcam mods are a completely different lane. You can directly intervene in the areas of the algorithm and image processing parts and adjust it for yourself. For now, you only have to use Gcam 8.7 versions on Pixel 7/Pro devices. This leaves you with only one option available, as the improvements haven't progressed very far yet. Try the Gcam 8.7 versions developed by the user codenamed BSG. You'll get pretty good results with the built-in libpatcher and developer parameters. For further you need to edit libraries with hex editor applications. But there are already experienced people working on this. It will be quicker to use a ready-made library. I will send you a Telegram Gcam mod group that only concerns Pixel7/Pro users via private message, maybe it will help you a little bit.

Gcam doesn't show the WB and shadows/highlights sliders. Annoying, but not a deal breaker. Also, I had to choose "reset all settings", because the camera took the picture but didn't save it on the phone. Strange...

Check the following parameters in the developer settings to check the status. The camera.chameleon.enabled parameter must be active. In the double exposure slider, when you type dualev in the search section in the developer settings, all three parameters you will see must be deactivated. You should now see 3 sliders on your screen.

Concerning the quality of the images, I have not been able to make any advanced comparisons until now.
I followed your indications, but I have only two sliders, WB and Exposure. Not a big deal...
In HDR+ mode, everything works.
I notice that the HDR+ advanced mode does not work:
in "auto", the camera freezes
in "default", the camera takes the picture, but does not save it, and the application closes itself. Same thing if I manually set the number of pictures.
Not very serious either, because as you explained, it's better to use the HDR+ mode, to avoid blur.
But I don't want to abuse your time.

It works. What I noticed is that it happened that the camera freezed after taking a photo. I had to turn the phone off and on to get everything working again. This happened 2 times, but everything seems OK now.

In fact, in Google camera or Gcam modes, the result works differently than normal photography. The higher the ISO, the lower the noise up to a point. As both the digital gain factors and the ISO increase, google algorithm increases the noise reduction force. That's why some people including me unlock the ISO limitation of the algorithm and let it go up to 20,000-30,000 values.

What's the best camera for travel? Good travel cameras should be small, versatile, and offer good image quality. In this buying guide we've rounded-up several great cameras for travel and recommended the best.

Above $2500 cameras tend to become increasingly specialized, making it difficult to select a 'best' option. We case our eye over the options costing more than $2500 but less than $4000, to find the best all-rounder.

So the stock camera across all lenses is really good, slightly more processing than what is needed but way less processing than Samsung's of old, but wow, using GCam for the S22 Ultra is something else (once you have it set up right, took me a while) the results are superb, much more natural detail rendering and way more detail, even the 10x zoom lens is stunning. See crops below, these are 100% crops (and they still look brilliant) Gcam on left, stock camera on right. Open in gallery and use loupe to see closer.
