Dear SADC PP Group members,
Following the successful meeting of member states that was held in South Africa in September in which it was agreed to adopt the SADC Medicines Database (see our database so far at http://medicines.sadc.int/meddb/) to implement the SADC Pooled Procurement Strategy prioritising the information and work sharing platforms, country visits were made to Mauritius and Namibia. We have planned to include DRC and Swaziland before the end of the year this way having given the opportunity to participate to all 14 member states.
I would like to inform you also that preparations have started for the drafting of the Regional PSM Standards for SADC Member States. Rob Verhage and I are currently attending an interesting workshop, together with some of the SADC Member States, on the WHO model quality assurance system for pharmaceutical procurement agencies and Good Distribution Practices in Nairobi organized by Quamed (http://www.quamed.org/en/home.aspx) and USAID. From here we are set to draft PSM standards for our region that should lead to the harmonisation of procedures in different member states. The regional standards will guide the efforts of the National Medicines Procurement Agencies to aim for applying best practices and this way improving access to quality essential medicines.
I will update you on the progress of the development of the procedure in the course of next month. We might be asking some of you for input before we discuss them at a meeting we are planning to organize in 2014.
Thanks
