Dear All,
I just would like to bring to the attention of all a few issues:
In this group we have one or two focal persons from each Member State. It is necessary that when there are issues or messages presented here, we share relevant issues with relevant colleagues in our country for feedback and continuity. For example, when Botswana asked for leads to donate their excess stock of Stavudine, such request should have been shared with colleagues at the AIDS control program and feedback given. Likewise, on the current question of cost of some diagnostics, the procurement colleagues or biomedical department colleagues should be reached for their input and feedback.
The Pooled Procurement team has visited seven Member States and is set to visit the rest before the end of the year, collecting data to feed into the information sharing e-platform as well areas of interest in pharmaceutical Procurement and Supply Management systems where countries could benefit from each others' strengths. During the visits there were positive aspects as well as challenges. In the coming days I will be sharing with you all a summary report of the visits so far so we can focus on the challenges to make things more workable for all. Our discussion of the challenges will then try to address the need for standardizing practices in our region so that sharing of information becomes beneficial and easy and not burdensome or another task on top of our mountain of tasks already in our laps. The work sharing should ease our jobs with improved procurement results.
The country visits highlighted a few PSM areas that one Member State may be able to contribute to assist another or may need help from another. Such areas may form a basis for work sharing as we progress in our procurement collaboration. I would like to discuss a few of these before we meet together to discuss the wider implementation of the pooled procurement strategy. Consultations with SADC Secretariat will start in order for all Member States to meet together during the fourth week of September this year. If the meeting gets confirmed, it is likely going to be hosted by Malawi; and for that reason I will seek more input from our Malawi colleagues.
So let us remember our responsibilities so that not only we in the group follow issues, but also our colleagues who should know about what is going on.
Wishing you all the best

Hi Bonnie,
A nice observation from you, thanks. The forum is a precursor to a formal mechanism but the spirit of communication will be the same. The focal persons were arrived at during last year's meeting but other resource persons are being added to facilitate speed with the process.
So, as you observe, each country can elevate the importance of the focal person and realign their job functions to include country coordination of pooled procurement. The same indeed is subject to comments from all in the forum for the best way forward and we can adopt the consensus for the formal mechanism.
Regards
Geoffrey

Hi Bonnie,
Dear Colleagues,
I have noted Bonnie's important observation and will be including it in our discussion on sustainability aspects related to the operationalization of the pooled procurement strategy during the upcoming meeting. It is understandable that procurement agencies in different countries operate in different environments.
Prior to the meeting, though, I would prefer that we do not slow down as challenges are identified and solved where there are lessons. This is also to avoid postponing benefits that should come at this stage.
Regards
Geoffrey Ngwira
