Update on filling the skills gap

September 2019

Promote Manufacturing in October

Across the country, manufacturers and educators will be promoting modern manufacturing and the exciting careers opportunities in this field on Friday, October 4, National Manufacturing Day and during the month of October. If you are hosting an event at your school or business to inspire the next generation of manufacturers, register your event on the national Mfg Day website.

If you'd like to host a tour at your business or college, offer classroom speakers, or you are an instructor who would like to request a tour or speakers for your class, contact Jeff Briggs at jeff....@sacvalleysme.org.

Project Update

Educator Training Planned for Winter

Building on the success of the past two summer "Train the Trainer" programs for college and high school teachers, the Sacramento Valley Manufacturers Initiative (SVMI), with Edu2Mfg, is planning to offer more training this winter between November and January, explained Mike Bell, Regional Director, Advanced Manufacturing North Region (Edu2Mfg), hosted at Sierra College. "The training topics may include Design for Manufacturing and Design Intent," said Bell. If you'd like to teach a workshop or are interested in participating, let Mike know by phone 916-432-0741 or email mi...@edu2mfg.org.

Impact of Teacher Training at Cosumnes Oaks High School

Cosumnes Oaks High School Computer Science teacher, Melissa Hale attended Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Mill & Tooling training at Rocklin High School in June 2019 organized by SVMI and Edu2Mfg. "I will primarily use what I learned to guide my after-school clubs," said Hale. "Our school's FIRST robotics team was able to get their first CNC machine and I will utilize this training to help the students make better parts for their robot."

Although she won't use the information to teach CNC, Hale sees the training as a way to connect students in her computer science courses to how those skills are applied in the real world. "When students are designing in 3D software, I can explain what a CNC machine would do to make the parts," said Hale. "I can now connect the coding that I teach to how G code works to communicate with CNC tools. It demonstrates to students the ease of learning a new language with other applications, once they start coding."

The training introduced manufacturing careers and the education paths. "I will be able to provide more informed advice about highly compensated manufacturing careers to graduating seniors seeking careers that don't require a four-year degree," said Hale.

Hale indicated that she enjoyed the practical, hands-on training. "We were given presentations and then shown how the information applied on the real CNC mills," said Hale. "I gained useful advice such as watching the marker squish and realizing why we use markers for our first couple of projects instead of expensive bits. I liked the easy atmosphere of the training where I felt comfortable and welcome."

Centers of Excellence Manufacturing Report

The Centers of Excellence produced a report on Advanced Manufacturing in the Sacramento region in December 2018. The report showed that in the seven county region, there are 41,000 manufacturing jobs at over 2700 manufacturing companies. The most challenging jobs to fill in the Sacramento region were production workers, manufacturing machine operators, electrical and mechanical engineers, field service technicians and maintenance and repair workers. Employers and educators are working together to better train incumbent workers and students to fill these roles through apprenticeships, customized training, and new high school and college courses. For example, Yuba, Sierra and Sacramento City colleges offered new CNC courses this fall semester.
