UCF EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH JUSTICE TABASSUM KHAN

New Delhi – 3 July 2026

The United Christian Forum (UCF) calls upon every citizen to support this statement of solidarity issued for Ms. Tabassum Khan, who serves as an Additional District and Sessions Judge in Narmadapuram, Madhya Pradesh. She has been subjected to extreme intimidation, death threats and a targeted social media campaign following a recent judicial order. UCF strongly condemns the malicious campaign, hounding, vilification, threatening her with violence after she discharged her judicial duties by convicting the offenders in a 2022 mob lynching case.

UCF believes that protecting a judge from intimidation is not a personal privilege but a structural necessity to uphold the rule of law. Judge Khan has merely facilitated the process of justice by deciding the case strictly on its legal merits. Judicial decisions and orders must be challenged before appellate courts, not through public intimidation, harassment and threats.

Dr Michael Willaims, National President of United Christian Forum said: “UCF stands in unwavering solidarity with Judge Tabassum Khan against this targeted hostility and has full faith in the independent judiciary of the country and hopes that she is not only provided immediate and comprehensive security by the State at the earliest but the individuals inciting this hate campaign against her are swiftly prosecuted under the law. Ultimately, it is not merely a question of security towards a Judge but a matter of safeguarding the most important pillar of democracy.”

As established by the Supreme Court of India in Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association v. Union of India (2015), judicial independence is a fundamental feature of the Constitution therefore the State must ensure that the Judges feel safe while deciding on sensitive and potentially controversial matters. Furthermore, international frameworks like the United Nations Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary mandate that the State must guarantee that judges can decide matters free from improper influences, inducements, or threats.
