Mike asks: How can I make the grain show while making it still look like part of the painting?

I think what you are trying to do is to delineate your subject from
the other grains to establish composition. To do this, use a stronger
hue outlining what you see from natures form from your mind’s eye,
articulating more from how you feel inside. Use what nature has given
you together with what you know about what you are trying to say.
That’s the connection from the spirit of the Earth and from your heart
that makes it come to life.

Mike's response:
Hello Ms. Harris,

I've finished my painting, along with my poem and artist's statement
to go along with it, and I have you to thank. With your ideas and tips
I was able to find those finishing touches to create one of my
favourite works of art to date. I am looking forward to meeting you in
a few weeks, and maybe to share my work with you. I hope to be able to
create more wonderful works in the future, and maybe trying to perfect
my techniques on wood as well.

Thank you very much for all your help,

Mike
