SACP congratulates Banyana Banyana for qualifying for the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations
Wednesday, 29 October 2025: - The South African Communist Party (SACP) joins the entire nation in congratulating the South African women’s senior national football squad, Banyana Banyana, for their qualification to play in the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Banyana Banyana’s success comes after a gruelling qualification competition hampered by many challenges against which the squad members triumphed in the end. The exceptionally talented squad’s fighting spirit has been an integral part of their long journey since their first appearance in the continental tournament in 1995, one year after our democratic breakthrough, and has since qualified for all 15 WAFCON tournaments, winning their first trophy in 2022.
The SACP calls upon the people of our country to continue their support for Banyana Banyana as they continue with their journey to the WAFCON and beyond. The SACP also calls for the department of sports and the South African Football Association (SAFA) to collaborate with South African people to develop women’s football, including targeted focus on schools’ sports development, particularly in townships and rural areas.
In this instance, the SACP will keenly monitor the progress of the implementation of the SAFA Women’s Football Strategy, launched on 31 March 2025, through which SAFA aims to supervise the development of women’s football in South Africa from grassroots level to elite, and local to international, while also ensuring a defined pathway that will see the professionalisation of women’s football and create sustainable programs.
