what happens is that when i run BF1942.exe a black screen appears for less than a second, and then nothing, i tried lots of things in compatibility mode as well, like run as administrator, all windows versions, run in 640x480 resolution (did some weird stuff to my display, had to restart my laptop)
2. Verify you have and if needed Get the latest drivers installed for the laptop from the manufacturer website. (Graphics driver, chipset driver, audio, lan, wifi.).
Make sure you know how you do this. First uninstall the current driver and install the new one if needed.
8. If you had bf1942 leftovers or multiple versions, the bf1942 registry entries have to be deleted as well. (one guy asking me for help had multiple leftover registry values everywhere causing the issue. Due to many attempts to install at different places on his computer)
Essentials
In order to be good at flying any airplane in Battlefield, you MUST have 100% or close to 100% viewing distance. If you don't or cant handle that, don't bother... you will be missing so much targets simply because you see them too late.
I use a Keyboard/Mouse combination for flying. It works well for me, more than a joystick would. And I seem to be able to get top 3 in most games I play. Not bad of plug eh? Taking off
Taking off is easy. You need quite a bit of space to take off, so don't try doing it in confined spaces. Always check your surrounding first. Don't squeeze between walls, vehicles, or other planes, as usually you will hit something. Wait until the run way clears first. Also, if you see a plane whizzing by, place yourself straight on the runway, and then view towards the plane (side view or whatever). If you see it coming back awfully close, jump and start running. A plane taking off is one of the easiest targets in the game. You can always get back on if they miss.Air Safety
Once in the air, you must check your surroundings. Once you get some alone time, change your view and look around on all sides, especially the back. Most pilots die not because the other person was a good shot, but because someone snuck behind them and shot them up before they could respond. And when you go in your bombing runs, keep checking your rear. The possibility of dying from being shot in the rear is greater then being shot from the side (unless they are experts, then you will die either way ).Bombing
I don't quite know how to explain this, but what I suggest you do is set a height from the ground in which you fly at all times. Fly at this height as much as possible, and practice bombing targets. I cant exactly tell you how far you must release bombs to hit your targets, because that depends on your height (I fly LOW, so I release them quite late; not to mention it is hard to hit me with AA ). In single player, practice bombing on static targets, especially AA guns, as those are your first objective while in the air (make a habit to take out all AA guns, even if they are not occupied, it will prevent you from being shot down. Its nearly impossible to be shot down by infantry unless they are super good or you are careless.
Once you get the hang of that, you should have a good *feel* for bombing, in which you can easily adapt to different heights. Dive bombing is also very effective (fly high, then dive straight down. Its the most accurate, at least for me).Dog fighting
Or Air combat. This is very hard unless your good at flying. If you have someone in your front, try to sneak up on them. Once you get close enough, shoot UNDER their plane (as in shoot their landing gears and stuff). The bottom side of the plane is weaker than tail (also, you might hit their engine, which is VERY weak). If they are turning, that is your chance to do major damage. Shoot about a half a plane or so in front of them, hope that it hits their engine. In order to be good at taking down a plane, you must be a better pilot than your enemy. Because even if you have a good shot, then can easily escape.
If your being trailed, and you have no wingman, prepare to show some l33t flying skills. I usually circle around a bit, hope that they don't follow me. If they do, I try going under objects (bridges and stuff), through trees: a lot of complicated maneuvering. The idea is to have:
1. Them crashing.
2. Them loosing you.
3. Getting behind them.The best outcome, IMO, is that they crash. While them crashing does not give you a chance for a kill, it opens you up for various other possibilities. Also, taking down a airplane can be tough and time consuming. They can lead you through a maze of turns, and ultimate, you might not even get the kill.Landing and Refueling
In case you haven't noticed, your refueling points are always back to the original airport or carrier. Even if you captured a enemy airport, you can refuel there unless you have one their planes. This goes vice-versa, so make note of that. If they have your plane, make sure they can reload by going back to your carrier.
Landing is quite simple. First off, don't land while viewing in chase mode. That is the worst mistake someone can make, since you don't see the actual height of your plane. Land by the first person view (the one with no insides showing). Don't be afraid, as scratching your nose landing does not take much damage.
To land, you must be going very slow. Allow for your landing gears to open, or you will go bouncing very high. The best way to slow down is turning. So the best way to land is fly the opposite way of your landing, turn with no more gas, and then keep going with minimal amount of gas to get you to your destination. Once you stabilized and lined up with your runway (and sure you will make it there at that speed), reverse. Land not with your nose at an angle to ground, but nearly perpendicular (not totally perpendicular, or you will just glide past it ). Once your gears touch the ground, you will bounce a bit. It is safe to jump out by now, if you think you might crash or get shot.
Refueling should not be done by landing however. Its better to refuel by just hovering over the airfield at a slow speed a few times. By landing, you risk getting shot, or hit a land mine.That should be it!

I'll probably reinstall tommorrow unless there's some sort of shipping fiasco.Although I can fly at a rudimentary level, my favorite aspect of BF is as a common grunt. I vary on attacking/defending but I seem to have greater efficency with jeeps then I do with planes. DasBier

Marine posted 05-12-03 01:08 AM EDT (US) 7 / 30 I suck at flying planes. but I am the best person you can find to watch the back of your plane if you need it. whats really fun is just attacking from the tail but when you get over a nice mountain just bail out and then snipe where people cant see you. I have killed many people that way. the only bad part is when you run out of ammo and there is no easy way to refill your ammo. Though I have once been able just to run down to their city and reload there. I have accually done it like 3-4 times. once I must have been against a newbie because he ran into the building and I thought "damn im dead" but then I noticed he didnt kill me so I got my knife out and killed him I just wish it was harder to take over boats. I have single handedly got one of those tiny transport boats and boarded the ship. and because almost no one takes control of the boats I can just take it Ah BF1942 is a great game. It sucks that I cant play it because of my 56k connection at the moment. Only 2 more days until I get a new Cable line What I just said is a lie. Surge

Also, you must be aware of machine-guns at ground. If you're overconfident, they will eat you like a sandwich.And if you're on someone's tail, don't fly fast.
What I learnt was that the bottom of the airplane is weak...I also hate it when I fly too low and bomb something and then my plane gets managed because of the flying parts. Also I hate it when enemy plane blows up the tank next to you and the tank drops ON you. =/Did you know that you can destroy planes with the Defgun/Battleship-guns? Annoying too. Or when your wingman sucks Flying under bridges looks cool but isn't that great an idea; you usually pull-up and he gets direct line of deflection shooting.BTW, can you bomb other planes? I talked about it then the enemy is turning, you shoot about a half a plane in front of them and hope to hit thier engine! Yeah, you can get hit from just about anything in BF and die . But I personally never have been hit by Defguns or Ship guns. A couple of times by Tank shells though.Yeah, you can bomb planes. LIke I said, if you can land on them, you can bomb them. Or if you going face to face, and get close to crashing, pull up and drop a bomb. You might be able to hit them. It does not do too much damage though (not as much like bombing a grounded plane), but it does freak the pilot out .As for flying, I use Mouse and Keyboard. Maybe you guys should try that. Its actually very good if you get used to it. Many people online are surprised I use mouse .
