Job Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as an Associate Research Fellow or Research Fellow in the Global Futures and Strategic Foresight (GFSF) Program for a two-year, fixed-term, renewable appointment. The GFSF program develops and applies foresight modeling tools, including the International Model for Policy Analysis of Agricultural Commodities and Trade (IMPACT), to analyze alternative futures for agriculture, natural resources, food security, nutrition and health. The successful applicant will join a team of researchers at IFPRI working with partners around the world to inform decision making at global, regional and national scales. The position reports to the Senior Research Fellow leading the GFSF Program and is based in Washington, DC.

Please note that Associate Research Fellow appointments at IFPRI have a maximum term of three (3) years, inclusive of any approved appointment extensions.

Essential Duties:

The Fellow will be responsible for:

 

·         Developing, running and analyzing foresight scenarios using the IMPACT system of models for the above-mentioned research project and others as needed.

·         Leading innovative new model development in areas such as assessment of climate variability and shocks; and/or distributional or health impacts of policies, technologies and investments.

·         Publishing research results in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with colleagues and partners.

·         Contributing to coding and other inputs and feedback to colleagues for the development and improvement of relevant modeling tools as needed.

·         Reviewing, harmonizing and refining data as needed.

·         Communicating research to a broad spectrum of stakeholders (researchers, academicians, policy makers, donors, and other partners).

·         Participating in capacity strengthening activities related to IMPACT.

·         Serving as a resource person for emerging research projects within IFPRI and with collaborating institutions related to IMPACT.

·         Assisting in development and monitoring of project budgets.

·         Preparing progress reports and other technical reports on program and project activities.

·         Assisting in supervising or coordinating the work of research support staff.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

·         PhD in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Public Policy or a closely related field.

·         Demonstrated experience in research on policy issues related to agricultural production, natural resources, trade, food security and/or health.

·         Strong data analysis and computer skills, including proficiency with major modeling software (including knowledge of or willingness to learn GAMS), statistical packages, and database management tools.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with running and coding partial equilibrium or general equilibrium economic models.

·         Demonstrated experience in working effectively in an inter-disciplinary and multicultural setting with other researchers and collaborators and levels of authority.

·         Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment, with careful attention to detail.

·         Demonstrated excellence in written and spoken English communication skills and in written and oral presentations.

·         Willingness to travel extensively as required.

 

Additional requirements at the Research Fellow level:

 

·         At least 3 years of post-PhD experience relevant to the job and demonstrated fundraising experience.

·         Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

·         Major external recognition within professional peer network based on publications and other leadership activities.

·         Demonstrated leadership skills and successful experience building and managing teams.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

·         Demonstrated fundraising experience.

·         Experience with international development and food security issues in developing countries. 

·         Written and spoken fluency in a second language. 

·         Experience with programming languages (such as C++, Fortran, Visual Basic, others), statistical packages (STATA, R, others), and GIS software (ArcGIS products, others).
