Please read this and take care.

I hope that the contents below will help you to avoid any unfortunate events such as the one described below.

Last week, a male cousin of mine (a hefty 6ft something) had gone to cargils kohuwala around 10.30 AM.

He had parked his car in the cargils car park and opened his car door to step out when he found a man standing by the door, practically blocking it, and smiling and talking about how he knew my cousin. This man had been middle aged, trousered, and smoking and speaking in sinhala. (Of course you need to be aware that it the attire could be very different next time around!)

My cousin had insisted he didn't know this guy and didn't have time to waste, telling him so repeatedly, but this fellow was not moving away, but kept saying how happy he was to see my cousin…. Etc….

This had gone on for several minutes, and my cousin had realised this wasn't a good sign, and had closed the door and locked it. Whilst still inside, he had shouted at the man and told him to get lost. But this guy wasn't budging, and to add to it, he had then said "put the shutter down, then you will realise who I am".

On his insistence and hoping that this guy will push off, My cousin – had put the shutter down a bit – NOT FULLY, and no sooner had he done it, this crook had  blown 2 puffs of smoke in to the face of my cousin. That was all he (my cousin) remembered for the next ……..minutes (goodness knows how long!)

He had felt dizzy, blinded and disoriented. He had stayed put in the car… until he came through, (some time later).  Even though he couldn't see properly due to blurred vision created by the fumes, he managed to get out of the car, with touch and feel, (still unable to see his way properly) walk in to cargils where immediately the staff had got him to sit and given him a glass of water.

He was so disoriented he couldn't find what he wanted and the staff got it for him, and then he had paid (he says he cant remember paying)… but managed to get back to his car, where he sat for the next 1 hour or so until he felt he was able to drive. Finally he drives himself home and he didn't regain his normal self until the next day.

He had a mobile with him right along with which he could have called on some one for help, but none of that occurred to him, as he was disoriented and confused.

We feel that him having the presence of mind to close his door and lock it saved him from far worse disaster.

See some points below – especially for you lady drivers, which I feel we need to keep in mind if we are to protect ourselves from events such as this.

Points to keep in mind, when you drive a vehicle with / without passengers.

  • Keep vehicle doors locked, and shutters up at all times.
  • Prior to getting IN or OUT of the vehicle have a look around, take note of who is around. Any unsavoury elements drive off.
  • Anyone who tries to chat you up make a big fuss, if they don't leave you alone sit on the horn, so that you attract attention of those around. (the last things crooks want is attention)
  • When leaving a shop / building / office etc… to get to your vehicle, MAKE SUREthe VEHICLE KEYS are in your hands and that you are not standing next to the vehicle LOOKING for them in your pants / bag or wherever they may be.
  • Getting IN or OUT of the vehicle should be done with swift movements, no dilly dallying with door open and 1 leg out looking for the phone etc…. ( that gives the crooks all the time they need to attack you).
  • FINALLY NEVER NEVER EVER, get out of the vehicle or walk up to your vehicle while being on your mobile or whilst txting. By this, you are unaware of your surroundings as your concentration is on the conversation / txt. Finish the call / txt. The delay of 5 mts may be the difference of saving yourself the trauma of an unsuspected attack by one of these crooks.
  • All you MACHO guys who are reading this, remember, if you think this can't happen to you, just don't leave room to regret at leisure. This did happen to a very big made tough guy.

It is my dearest hope that none of you encounter an event such as this.

Take care,
