Press Release: UPYC tours Belgium 2012

The University of Pretoria (UP) Youth Choir consist of an enthusiastic
group of 73 young people between the ages of 14 and 19 years. The Choir is
under the capable leadership of Lhente-Mari Pitout, who has a strong
foundation in music and choral conducting not only in South Africa, but
also as member and later assistant to the World Youth Choir.

The objectives of the UP Youth Choir are to empower the children from more
than 20 schools across the Tshwane area to develop their vocal talents and
to learn the skills of working together as a team to achieve mutual goals,
develop professional performance abilities and to create
understanding and tolerance for each other�s cultural, religious and
personal differences. With more than 50% of the members coming from a
previously disadvantaged background, we allow for a safe multi-cultural
and multi-racial environment in which our members grow.

The University of Pretoria Youth Choir is currently on tour in Belgium
with 59 members, from 26 April till 6 May 2012. The UP Youth Choir was the
only choir from South Africa to have be invited to attend and take part in
the 60th European Music Festival for Young People in Neerpelt, Belgium.
(www.emj.be) Yesterday, The UP Youth Choir received a first prize in their
category: �Pennant category mixed voice youth choirs�. This means that the
choir received between 80-89% for their competition concert!

The choir has already performed in Genk, and the choir will be performing
further in Mol and Leuven over the course of the week. The choir has
already made an instant hit throughout Belgium, with interviews from local
press and TV shows.

The choir will return to South Africa on 6th May 2012.
