Onward

Participants from Chennai to assemble at Central Station at 4:30pm on Friday (near Ananda Bhavan restaurant). We leave by Managalore Express and  reach Calicut around 4:15am. All those who join from Calicut are expected to be present latest by 4am. We do NOT wait for latecomers. We have rented two medium-sized buses to transport all of us from Calicut to Muthappanpuzha (base camp).

Trek

Our mission objective is to conquer Vellari Mala & Vavul Mala, the highest peaks in this area. Total distance (one way) is around 14km. Total ascent is around 1500m. Trek difficulty is very high due to the steep climb and higher altitude. We are on a tight schedule as we need to reach back on Monday afternoon in order not to miss our return train. If some people face difficulty to keep up with the pace of the group then we might have to leave those people along an intermediate campsite accompanied by few of the 5 local guides we arranged.

Return

We return by Chennai Mail from Calicut at 5:30pm on Monday evening and arrive back in Chennai Central at 5:25am on Tuesday early morning. Tell your manager not to expect optimum performance from you that same day... ;-)

Must-carry

The key word on any high difficulty trek with steep climb is "LIGHTWEIGHT". You will have to climb 1500 meters. Every extra 100 grams of weight will kill you. Ensure to pack MINIMAL luggage to minimize the weight of your backpack. Note that you will need to carry around 5kg of food/water extra provided by us!

The nights at 2000+ altitude will be cold - ensure to bring a sleeping bag or thick blanket with you. We do not carry tents. We just carry lightweight tarpauline sheets in case of rains.

Take good shoes, medium-sized backpack, LED torch, One extra set of clothes.

Do NOT use NEW shoes. Many times participants get painful feet by wearing new shoes. Also, frequently participants run into difficulty by loosing their soles. Check if your shoes are in proper shape.

Food and water is arranged by the organizers. Proper rationing of your limited water reserve is a must.

Leeches

According to the guide there are no leeches during this season

Forgot to mention one important thing - carry a sleeping mat with you, preferably a lightweight/warm thermocoil mat.

Hi,

Today I purchased the lightweight thermorexin mat. It is available in the shops near Royapettah clock tower. 3/4" thickness (recommended by the club) was not available in many shops. They only had 1/2" rolls. Different shops quoted different prices. Some quoted as high as Rs.120 per meter for 1/2" rolls.

I bought 2 metres of 1/2" thermorexin mat and cut it into two (lengthwise)

Shop: Modern Traders Price: Rs.80/meter. Located on the left hand side when approached from the clock tower.

Thought this might be useful.

P.S: Please check availability of 3/4" before buying.

Regards,
Hari

Thanks for sharing this info Hari. You can also glue two thin sheets together to obtain a thicker sleeping mat.

Recently I had bought a sleeping mat made of rubber kind of  sheet. Its thin (.5cm ) but it is very soft and strong. It can be used in any surface.

If you are a regular trekker and expect a good comfortness , you can go for this sleeping mat.

This is available in few plastic shops in kasi chetty street, parrys.

Cost Rs.350 for 2 mtrs length and 1 m wide. You can cut it as two also.
