36 members completed a wonderful trek to Skandagiri near
Bangalore this weekend. 28 joined from Chennai, 8 from Bangalore. 8 existing
trekkers, 28 new members joining for the first time. Great crowd, great
enthusiasm, good team work, 4-5 new D-SLR members.
This completes trek #21. (so far we have published 19 on the blog – 2 posts still pending). Every trek so far seems to be unique and a different experience.
This time we climbed on a rocky type of mountain with bushes
near the base and grass near the top. No tree/forest cover due to smaller hill
size (read: lack of water for trees). The Skandagiri hill is an isolated hill
surrounded by flat terrain. The trail was clear and well indicated. Steepness
was average I would say. There were lots of other gangs from Bangalore visiting
this place.
We left Central station on Saturday morning 7am and returned
quite exhausted on Sunday night 9pm. We reached the base around 4pm and reached
near the top around 7pm. The climate was very comfortable – we started at an
altitude of around 900m and climbed up till around 1500m. From experience (and
reflected in our trek difficulty calculation/formula) I can say that the
climate makes a big difference between an easy (cool, breezy) and difficult
(hot sun, no wind) trek/climb. This trek was fairly easy in my opinion –
average climb, good climate, easy terrain and limited trekking distance.
We got rain when we started off for the trek and got some
heavy downpour while pitching up the 9 tents in the dark (unique experience I
can say ;-). Most of the rest of the time, the weather was fine. We were
surrounded by clouds/fog on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Sunday later
in the morning we got some clear splendid views. We set up our tents on a flag,
grassy surface near the edge of the cliff from where we have a beautiful view
on the valley and village down at the hill. Lots of photos were taken which
should soon be uploaded and shared with all.
Here come the big one.... All my photos uploaded....
