Chennai Beach Cleanup - Jan 7-8
Imagine a pregnant turtle returning to the beach where she was born and trying to find a place to nest and lay eggs on our garbage covered coastline... All waste you see here is our own garbage flushed through the city drains and rivers into the ocean. Anything that floats is thrown back onto our beautiful beaches. Garbage cannot be thrown away, it always gets back at you, either on the beach or on your seafood dish loaded with plastic contamination. Not a pleasant sight? Imagine the turtle's state of mind after swimming for thousand+ km in search for their nesting grounds and ending up on a garbage dump instead...

Captionless Image

The garbage we throw away will slowly mix into the ocean and affect the lives of sea animals and birds, which has a direct impact on our eco-system including our own health. What goes around comes around. Also it significantly affects the Olive Ridley turtle nesting season.

Chennai Trekking Club is planning a major cleanup drive this weekend of the beaches North and South of the Adyar river 4-6pm. We are calling out to volunteers to join forces with us to restore the beauty of Chennai's beaches and give a helping hand to those beautiful Olive Ridley Turtles which return every year to our coast to breed.

Target beach: Foreshore to Marina (Saturday) and Bessy to Broken Bridge (Sunday). Assembly: Beach near Foreshore bus depot (Saturday) or Thalappakatti Bessy (Sunday) 4pm

Register here if you are interested to join forces with us in this cleanup. Gloves and other necessary materials will be provided. Spread the word with your friends & colleagues and make them join forces.
