All,

Just wanted to check if any of our members belongs to the press?

There is one scenic and well known trekking destination near to Chennai which has lost it's attraction due to corruption by local guards part of an eco tourism project which have spoiled the place by -

converting it into a place of alcohol consumption which is unsafe for ladies and families and true trekkers
parked vehicles of visitors are broken into and personal valuables are stolen
trekkers with good intentions are being harassed and large sums of money demanded

I am referring to Tada, 2 hours North of Chennai just across the Andhra border. I want to get some real stories published in the newspapers in order to put pressure on the Forest Department and Police Officials to take action on these corrupt locals and restore this place to its original beauty.

Peter,

why dont we report it in Citizen Journalist column of IBN Live (CNN IBN's online portal) ?

But i think it would be more popular if we have any video or photo supporting our reports in this.

Long back I uploaded a video of infant baby girl killed and thrown in a drainage canal. And this video in website got so many views and 1000's of comments

If our video is really good, they'll show it in the news channel also

Hi,

It must be a movement against spoiling nature. I still remember 4 / 5 years back, the place was better. But when I went a year back, it was totally spoiled.... Lot of anti social elements drinking, spoiling the place and we were so scared and left the place immediately without starting our trek.

Hii

This looks like quiet a problem, and frankly i feel that if we could get together and put up a small rally it might get a bigger focus on the issue.

Here at Velachery we had protested nearly 5 years to get the garbage burning in the Pallikaranai Marshland stopped. Though it took us so many years, it did finally stop last year. Year after year, even though many newspapers wrote about it, with The Hindu doing huge front page article about, without fighting for it just didn't happen until last year.

It might be a long process but it might be worth a shot! will throw some limelight on that place.

i hope am not blabbing too much. its a thought!

many thanks

The photo below taken last year during Nagala/10 and gives a good idea what has become of Tada recently. It's taken next to the beautiful water pool next to the temple. Worst thing is that the drunkards break bottles inside the water posing danger to other visitors. The gangs of drunks also harass ladies, families and small groups of trekkers through eve teasing and verbal abuse. This also happened twice during past CTC treks.

The local guards at the gate close there eyes for all this pollution and harassment and instead harass innocent trekkers from CTC trying to extract money from us on three past treks because we stayed overnight in Tada. They typically confiscate our vehicles until we pay up. One time we had to call the local police to get out of their claws. The same guards acts as pimps providing prostitutes to those interested. This all happens under the label of "local eco-tourism development". Tada was much better/cleaner before they set up this project and entry gate.

Adding on top of this recently several breakins have been reported in vehicles and valuables were stolen. Vehicles are parked at a fenced parking guarded by these local guards so it's fairly logical to me that these guards are either involved or at least aware of what is happening.

Hello All,

I would also suggest not to just stop with sharing these pics in the press. May be there should be a clean up
trek by CTC, during which we not only trek, but on the way down, we pick up any such bottles/plastics, put them in a sack and get it down right to the forest office. Later, take these pics of huge garbage filled sacks too along with the team and publish that too and show them that WE CARE for the place.

We can also measure the total weight of garbage collected(I'm sure it will exceed 100 kilos as I myself saw so many bottles and plastics lying around) and handed over for processing to the forest dept and tell them to at least maintain the place if they cant clean it up themselves.

If these details get published alongside, it will become and official record and next time if so much garbage is found, then definitely they will be blamed by default.

This is just my opinion about protecting the place and eliminating corrupt people;Kindly feel free to share your views too. I apologize in case this mail had caused a difference of opinion among others.

Thanks,
Santhosh

Hey Santhosh,

this idea sounds close to the cleaning up of the beaches. I think its a neat idea.
but my only concern is that people should not take it for granted. They should not feel that since there is a team to clean up, yaay i dump my garbage here.

But if the same thing is done, while a bunch of press people are around, yes then it will work i feel.

Oh and if anybody willing to do a full report and write an article about it, the local newspapers of Velachery are interested in publishing it.

happy to help

Hi,

This is a very unfortunate situation! I visited Tada 9 years before, there was no roads, no checkpost, no parking, no forest dept,  no ashram, absolutely nothing except the nature!! For someone from Chennai who had grown all the time looking at concrete buildings and hoardings, its the closest and only example of what Nature is.(before CTC and its home Nagala came) Its painful to know that it has got spoiled so much and to add more injury, i'm going to visit it this saturday (after 9yrs) to start a trek (CTC Tadagala) from there.

We will see if we can take some videos and pictures highlighting the pollution and unsocial elements there.

Best regards,

Yeah, i second janarthanan, instead of the usual trek. We can do a surpirse recce cum trek, and focus our energies and synergy on the problems/issues plaguing that specific area. Likewise as someone had said earlier, we shall take videos,photos,question/interview people visiting the place and also the locals near the vicinity of the trekking spot. If possible, we will do our best in tiding up the place. And later take video/photograph of the collected garbage and prepare the stats.

We also can take video/photo of the surrounding natural beauty of the place, the trek, the nature etc. Then later combine them to make a short video in documentary format.

Guess we ctcians have well motivated trekkers who can contribute in whatever department possible like earlier to high lighten this issue successfully.

Any suggestions/criticism is welcome.

But !! What about Security,  it would be safe to have a press reporter, cop,  with the group, or inform local authorities / cops about the event .
what if the the local people / officials  may show (pretend) as we are invading their place, source of other income and recreation ;)  create trouble !

I spoke with a Tada local who owns a shop, our conversation went like this:

Me: Why dont people of Tada do something about the mess people create in Tada, stop all drinking, breaking bottles, etc

Local
: We did couple of things earlier. We used to round up and beat people who were misbehaving, but had to stop that. We later complained to Forest officials, they said they'll stop guys bringing in liquor but that is majority of tourists for Tada. Tada town has grown this much due to visitors (majority drunkards). Stop drunkards, our main source of income goes down. We do hate what is happening to our tada water, but nothing can be done.

This is pretty much our covnersation verbatim.
Of course, you and me want to cleanup Tada, its vacation and fun for us!
But interesting angle there, what if locals do not want to stop drunkards, when they could(?) potentially do it anytime they want to

Disclaimer: I spoke only with that single shop vendor, so no real sampling data.

But if this is consistent thought pattern, there can be no solution without local support. Me thinks, could we request Arul Sekar to work out his magic in creating contacts in Tada, to read their pulse, etc. Dont know if it'll work out, as Tada is more developed than tribal treks Arul arranges.

My 2 cents,
Ananth

Hi Ananth,

its gr8 that you had that conversation. I never thought in that perspective until i read your mail.
I really dunno what to comment or say after reading it. The article in IE was very neatly written, but how will all these boldly stating articles help if the local people won't co operate. I hope the officials will wake up early to this issue and something good will happen!

We need to educate the locals on the positive tourism. We have to make them to understand that if the drunkards are not there the tourism will flourish much more.We should teach them on the safety for tourist esp women, children which would bring more money than the drunkards in the long run.

Thanks

Thanks to many of our members for providing us with several contacts from various key newspapers and stations.

Out of the many responses/ideas received I have decided to proceed with following plan (courtesy Santhosh TP) -

CTC will organize a "Save Tada" cleanup trek which will be a regular 1-day trek to the beautiful crystal clear pools of Tada, except that on the way back we will collect as much garbage as possible and hand over the same to the forest officials covering the whole event with photos, videos and interviews. We will try to have someone from the press be present or if not possible hand over our audiovisual material to the press afterwards. This will have maximum impact/visibility. Our primary focus is on pollution/garbage. If we are able to capture the harassments/drunkard gangs also that will provide added impact in the news.

An invitation for this "Save Tada" cleanup trek will follow soon. The more members participating and the more garbage we collect, the more visibility we will get in the news,
Peter.

I forgot to mention that Tada is very close to my heart - it's the birthplace of CTC's signature "trail-less treks" - it's the place where we initially started exploring beyond known/existing trails, where we started climbing up through unexplored bushes and streams on both sides of the valley to the top of the surrounding mountains trying to locate the source of Tada falls. Tada gave us the confidence to leave the known trails and create our own path, navigating using Google Maps and GPS. After our initial Tada missions all limits disappeared in CTC and we started exploring many unknown surrounding locations.

It's time to go back to mother Tada and save her from the current abuse, restore her original beauty and make it a clean, safe place again for first time trekkers as it used to be in the past.

Here are some photos that we captured a couple of weeks before during a trek in Tada (CTC Tadagala) focusing on the pollution and unsocial elements issue:

Its was a rainy weekend and the crowd was less but nevertheless the noted crimes were brazenly visible. The whole place was completely polluted with every nook and corner of streams, paths beside the stream, mountain sides, under the rocks, inside the streambed, even floating on the mountaintop cave pool and falls;....everywhere plastics of a whole range of items were strewn in abundant - mineral water bottles, soft drink bottles of every brand, liquor bottles, wrappers of biscuits, assorted snacks, aluminium foils, paper plates, plastic cups, metal caps, torn cloths, footwear......the list is endless!!!

You name any kind of food item garbage and i bet one can certainly find plentiful of samples for each item. Worse, the liquor bottles were smashed mindlessly into water streams and pathways making it very unsafe to walk and swim at someplaces.

We also saw liquor being brought in large quantities (sports bag!!) and consumed very openly beside streams by several gangs whose behavior were also very nasty and unsocial. They were passing lewd comments on the visiting public, especially women and couples. I saw a large group of school children and a group of friends retreat hastily as soon as they had arrived after seeing all the pollution and gangs in drinking spree.

Definitely a campaign to save TADA from these abusers and to clean the mess is a high-time need. And please everyone do not underestimate, the problem is quite serious and severe that it looks like gunny bags will not be sufficient for a complete clean-up, it will easily fill several truck loads!!!!

Please feel free to download, modify and use the images as necessary if it can help to bring a bit of awareness about this issue.

Best regards,
Naveen

Thanks to all for the many press contacts we received including major news papers, TV and FM channels. Balaji and Vinod are currently in touch with several contacts to cover our Tada cleanup mission both during the trek as well as post-trek coverage.

There is one more thing we require - although Tada is nearby Chennai and mostly frequented by people from this city, it's located in Andhra and therefore comes under the authority of the AP forest officials. Therefore, it would be more effective if some of you can provide us contacts within the Andhra press.

In case anyone can help us on this, please reply to myself/Balaji/Vinod,
Peter.
