For our dense forest trek to Ombattu Gudde in Karnataka two weeks back we obtained a hi-res topographic map of the area from the Archeological Survey of India in Bangalore. The scale of the map was 1:25.000 which means 1cm on the map corresponds to 250m on the ground. It clearly shows all the key features of the terrain including topology, rivers, tree cover and more. This allowed us to navigate through unknown terrain.

When I sent my driver to the Archeological Survey of India office in Chennai (Fort St George) they told him that they cannot provide any topo maps (restricted usage by army and so).

Does anyone know where we can get good detailed (minimum 1:50000 scale) topo maps for South-India? This would really allow us to discover new unexplored places,

Peter.

Great Patil,

This address seems to work better. I just asked the about a topomap for the
area surrounding Kodaikanal and he told me that on Monday he would be able
to give me either a 1:50K or 1:25K scale map which is excellent.

Great, this means we will soon be exploring new undiscovered forest and
mountain trails near Kodai ;-)

If this works out I will try to obtain maps from other interesting (forest,
mountain) places in Tamil Nadu also,
Peter.

I just picked up four 1:25000 scale maps from the area surrounding
Kodaikanal -

58 F/7 SE 58 F/11 SW
58 F/8 NE 58 F/12 NW

These topomaps provide very rich detail about the terrain including rivers,
hill slopes, forest density, roads, paths, villages, etc. This will allow us
to do some interesting treks along some yet to be discovered trails. I will
plan something around end of this month. I will book 30 train tickets in
advance to Kodai Road station, the most nearby place.

I would like to obtain similar maps for the Eastern Ghats near Tada. As
these are located in Andhra we have to be obtain these from the same office
in Hyderabad.

Anyone in the club who would be willing to pick up these?
