The FAQ v 1.0

Several people have asked me doubts regarding many aspects of application process, classes and preparation, and ASOC exam etc.

I have summarised the answers in the form of a FAQ below.

1. I am a Non Chennai candidate and hence cannot appear for the classes. Will I be able pass the exam with just self study?

The exam will be for the Restricted Grade Amateur License, the minimum age for which is 12 YEARS only. SO EVEN A 12 YEAR OLD CAN PASS THE EXAM WITH PROPER PREPARATION. If the exam syllabus is designed for a 12 year old to take WHY CANT YOU???

Self study is sufficient to confidently appear for the exam. However I would advice you to join at least the 9th Oct class so that you can do the last minute cram and clear all your doubts.

2. This is too short notice. Please give sufficient notice for us to enroll

  • The exam dates are not under our control.
  • The exams are conducted by a few designated officials from the Monitoring stations all over India. The Chennai office is at the below address

Monitoring Station, Wireless Monitoring Organisation, Ministry of Communication & Information Technology, Department of Telecommunication, Government of India

IWMS, Perungudi, Chennai 96

  • There are only 2 designated officers in the Chennai office who can administer the ASOC exam, one of whom is physically challenged and hence is limited to conducting exams at the Perungudi office only.
  • The other person is responsible for conducting ASOC and all other exams besides other responsibilities.
  • A lot of spade work needs to be done before an examination can be conducted especially outside the monitoring station on non working days.
    • Examinations can be conducted outside the Monitoring station only if there are at least 20 candidates
    • All applications have to be received and scrutinized, before acceptance.
    • Question papers have to be set afresh for each exam.
    • A team of at least 2-3 officials has to be formed to conduct the exam.
    • Time has to be scheduled for paper valuation, result passing, approval, and sending result to candidates
  • The office is heavily understaffed and they are constrained by a lot of procedural and infrastructure bottlenecks.
  • Ham radio exams are the lowest priority work for them.
  • Majority of us will be available for exams only on Sunday for attending exam and the officials Sundays are always packed with official work (which is a holiday for them too)

So we just have to take what dates are offered.

3. When will you be repeating the classes? Due to various reasons I cannot appear for the exam on 10th October. When will the next ASOC exam scheduled?

I gather that this exam happens on a regular basis? Is that so? Since you say that its mostly based on self study like most other exams, can i take it up some other time? with more preparation? Do you have a set of dates or something for the other upcoming exams?

In Chennai the exams are officially to be held atleast once a month. Since the number of ham applicants is not that many it doesnot happen that frequently.

The classes will be recorded and posted online, for future use on www.youtube.com and docs.google.com

Even if you are not able to appear this time, I suggest you fill your form indicating this and send in the application. We wont take it for processing for this exam. We will queue it up for the next available date. Anyway majority of the preparation is to be done by self study only. We will have a fast track cram session one day before the actual exam day.

4. How will I prepare for morse code with just 2 days classes?

The exam being scheduled on 10th Oct is for the restricted grade for which THERE IS NO MORSE CODE TEST.

5. I dont reside in Chennai.

I dont have address proof for Chennai

Can I appear for the exam in Chennai?

Yes you can appear for the exam. You DONOT have to produce any address proof. Only AGE PROOF and NATIONALITY PROOF is needed.

6. I dont have a passport?

For Nationality proof

EITHER

Attested copy of passport

OR

If you dont have a passport, print Nationality Certificate Form and get is signed from one of the officers listed below :-

  • Gazetted officers of Central or State Governments.
  • Members of Parliament or State Legislatures.
  • Sub-Divisional Magistrate/Officer.
  • Tahsildars or Naib/Deputy Tehsildars Authorised to exercise magisterial powers.
  • Principal / Head Master / Head Mistress of the recognized institutions (School / College) if applicant is a Bonafide student of that institution.
    • This option to be used ONLY if you are currently a student.
    • Attested copy of Student ID card / Bonafide certificate MUST ALSO be attached to prove student status and enrollment in the institution claimed.

The Ham Exam Scheduled on 10th October is postponed. The new date will be announced by 9th October. We are trying our level best to have it conducted within this month.

For all those who didnot register because of the short notice, here is your chance to register, prepare and appear for the ASOC exam.
