I am sorry to inform you all that Ladies cannot participate in this trek due to restriction in Vellingiri hills. Also for the last 200 metres, footwears are not allowed.

Thanks,

Dear all,
Shoes can be worn till the 6th hill. Only the last 200 metres or so require shoes to be removed, which you can do near a rock. I have done this trek both with and without shoes. If you want to try without please add 1 more hour minimum to both up and down time. Makes a diff. Suggest you dont try it.
Regards,
Vinod

Footwear is not allowed in the entire 7 hills due to religious discourse. And You cant walk in bare foot in the morning since its a hard rock and will be very hot. Its suits for night trek. And its banned in off season.

Delay Is only a disappointment, Not a defeat...!

Well did the trek on 30 May 09. Very challenging as well as exhausting. (timing given is slightly short and might require at least one hrs plus). Please carry lots of water as well as dates / energy food. Steep climb for first five hills. Breathe taking scenario, Mystic charm , enchanting abode of Shiva also know as Dakshin Kailash with chance to meet  sadhus around doing penance or praying. The view at last hill is alife time experince with Shivling  of Shiva at seventh cave . Well u will witness magnificent view of Siruvani reservoir, Isha yoga centre, Karunya university, Coimbatore plains as well as Silent valley beckons you all.If any query will try to help and let me know.(do be prepared for leeches as it rainy season).
A lifetime experience for all planning to go
All the best. "Happy Trekking , Keep walking."

Hi everyone,
I trekked to Vellingiri or Velliangiri (as it is also called as) in Oct'08. This is an extremely strenous-n-awesome trek, more like an ardous pilgrimage...But once you reach the top, past 7 hills you will see what you have achieved...

Sharing my trek details & pics with you :

Have a great trek,

Cheers,

Dear All,

There are few religious people sitting in the base of hill who may not allow you to climb up with shoes from down. Please keep the shoes in the bags for the first 100 steps. Then, you can wear that even upto the 7th hill. Only near the temples, shoes to be removed. I have done this and a bit effective. As Karthik suggested, it is a night trek particularly during full moon days and it is not advisable in the new moon days. Day trekking would be very difficult due to lot of stairs in the first hill and the plains on top of the 5th & 6th hills.

Thanks and regards,
Vijay.

Has anyone gone beyond this seventh hill? I have heard people say that
there is a cave beyond this hill where one can find several sadhus
staying there forever, living with little food and meditating!

Vivek

I heard there is a cave behind the shivling, where some sadhus stay. I could find the place, but, I could not find the way inside. And, there is also a way directly to the ISHA ashram from 6th hill it seems, which goes through the thick forest. I have not tried that.

Hi all ;-)

There are too many confusions in this trek. I'm from Coimbatore & I was staying near Poondi (foot hills of Vellingiri hills). And I'm sure that shoes are not allowed in any of the hills because The Gateway to the hills starts from
Poondi Murugan Temple @ Foot Hills. You can enter to the hills only by this temple gate.  Simply its like a typhical Sabari Mallai hills. There are specific timings to enter to the hills and if going in off season means you have to discuss with some local panchayath people. I might sound discouraging but really not. Prepare before you all go. Its a best place to trek. All seven hills are of different kinds of rocks, clays and some limestones.

And here some info abt it...
Velliangiri Hills count amongst the lesser-known hill stations of Tamilnadu. Of all the mountain shrines in Kongunadu, the Siva temple of Velliangiri in the western boundary is considered to be the most famous. Known as Rajathagiri, Velliangiri, Dakshin Kailash or Bhoolok Kailash, this sacred spot, according to legend, is where Siva performed his cosmic dance on the request of his consort Umadevi. The five faces of Lord Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Maheshwara and Sadasiva, are seen as Panchagiri and as Panchalingas pertaining to the panchabhutas, in Velliangiri. The hill ranges have abundant natural resources, which include rare herbs. And it is true Vivek, that there are some Sadhus living behind the Shivaling inside the caves. And you can find some snakes like cobra inside the cave. I found it once when I gone in Off season. Also You can see the some hills of Kerala and you can see the Siruvani dam from the 3rd to 6th hills. This hill is known as Seven faces of Shiva. its holy and nice to trek. Enjoy Guys :-)

Well ,
Problem of being objected on wearing shoes was faced by us. However we had spoken to temple officals (office is co-located) two days before. Also on the start of trek the people at the gateway had objected of wearing shoes.. However when explained that we had taken permission, they told us to go from a pathway from side and not from the entrance. same while returning one has to remove the shoes and keep in bag or come from side way path. However at seventh hill one has to remove to have the darshan and with that long trek one would love to walk barefoot. We had started the trek in morning 0740hrs (about 24 of us with age group of 21 to 45 yrs) and the last person reached around 1245 on the seventh hill. We were back by 1715 in evening to the base.

HI,
The registrations for this trek closes tomorrow [Tuesday 1-9-09].

We have finalized that not to take girls/ladies for this trek (this time), though we had 80% response said 'ladies are allowed'.
We don't want to take blind chances. We will find a fix for this issue, by checking it directly by ourselves out there. So maybe in future CTC can
take girls/ladies for the Velliangiri trek.

Note:
1. Girls registered for the trek, Please intimate the organizers by sending a mail.
2. The Chennai CTCians who are yet to register for this trek, can hand over the money to me. Banglore CTCians who are yet to register, can hand over the money to Mr. Senthil.
3. This trek is planned as a Difficult one day trek. So i request the participants to prepare yourselves.
4. Carry small/medium back pack.
5. Carry rain jackets / Jerkin. Carrying extra set of clothes is optional.
