What is Geo-tagging?Geo Tagging is basically adding information inside the photographs about where exactly the photograph was taken. a geo-tagged photograph contains latitude/longitude data along with other EXIF data like aperture, time take, ISO, etc which are usually embedded in the photographs anyway.
Why would i geo-tag a photo?coz its lot of fun! with geo tagged photos we can know exactly where the photo was taken and then go to the exact place next time and probably take the same tree again. wouldnt it be fun to see how things change over time? well apart from that i dont know any other use as such. but i'm pretty sure u'll enjoy it too :)
hmmm interesting. So how do i geo-tag a photo?Easiest way to geo tag a photo is by using picasa and google earth installed in your computer. open the photos on your picasa desktop and click geo-tag button, (or go to tools>geo tag>geotag with google earth), this will open google earth and you can then pin point the location of the photo on google earth and the latitude/longitude will get embedded in the photo.
But, I take tonnes of photos i dont have time to geo-tag so many one by one on google earth. With CTC carrying a gps on most treks, we have a solution for that too. 1)Just download the gpx track log from the
files section in our google groups after a trek 2) download/install this free program
Copiks photo mapper. 3) load your photos and the gpx track log in the program and 4)click the tag button and it will tag all the photos using the gpx log automatically.
Points to be noted while geo tagging photos this way*Remember that this will only work well if the gps which we carry on treks is near the camera. No use tagging photos using the gps log when the gps was left in the car and you were clicking photos in mountains. so only tag photos which u know were taken closer to the gps receiver.
*Also make sure the time is set correctly in your camera, as this program will use the time embedded in the photos to geo-tag them. best is to set it using the time in the gps receiver itself which is always correct.
*you can even tag your old photos if you find the exact track log of that trek in the files section.

notice that every picture has a photo location map with a marker showing the place where the photograph was taken.
have fun.
