CTC Chennai Flood Relief Survey - Unreached Areas/Neighborhoods

We NEED VOLUNTEERS to go out in the field beyond the main roads and known city areas deeper into the more remote flood affected areas, city outskirts to find out the relief requirements near low lying areas, lakes, rivers, flooded areas. Sufficient relief materials and volunteers for segregation/distribution are available in the city but we NEED to identify the lesser known neighborhoods that are in real need.
We need your help to visit any of the 140 areas listed below with your vehicle, go deeper inside the sub-areas / smaller streets ./ neighborhoods, talk to local community to assess if any relief has reached and if not, what are the urgent requirements. Identify the type of materials, quantity, number of families affected, extent of flooding, etc. and submit your survey in the form below.
Do NOT fill in this form based on forwarded messages. We will contact you in person to get more details on your field survey.

So far we surveyed 30 areas / neighborhoods in and around the city where no relief has reached yet. Many relief materials entering the city don't know where to go or end up in the same well known places / main roads / interior city.

Yesterday night I personally visited various areas South of the Chembarambakkam lake which were badly hit by the floods and some still partly under water and access is difficult (roads damaged, flowing water). We found 300 poor families near Palanthandalam (Anna Nagar) and 250 families near Somangalam (MGR Nagar) which are still on the roads unable to return to their flooded homes. No relief is reaching to these interior areas away from the main roads or city outskirts. We badly need more volunteers to get onto their bike/car and help us in reaching out to those in need:

Step 1 - Check which areas have been surveyed already -tinyurl.com/floodsurveyresults
Step 2 - Pick one area for your survey - tinyurl.com/ctcfloodmap
Step 3 - Submit your survey results - tinyurl.com/ctcfloodsurvey

It's important that you go to the interior areas, away from the main roads, talk to local people and police to find out affected, poor neighborhoods where no relief has reached yet.

Our CTC Relief Center coordinators is directing relief materials to the surveyed areas and will keep the sheet updated. Anyone other individuals/NGOs directing relief materials please let us know so we can keep the status up to date,

Peter

Our volunteers made tremendous progress mapping the relief status in the city - 45% of the target areas have been surveyed! 40 areas identified where no relief has reached yet. Our CTC Relief Center has dispatched materials to 7 areas. Many others are in progress. Please direct any relief materials to our center (contacts: Prasanna: 9994816896, Manoj 9597119618). We need volunteers to help us scout 72 remaining areas mostly in the city outskirts.

We are launching a CTC Flood Relief Map of Chennai showing real-time survey and relief status: relief.chennaitrekkers.org. Any volunteer doing survey / NGO doing relief can update the map directly:
  • Blue - area needs survey => require volunteers to scout => update survey results on map. Any other area that requires relief can also be added to map.
  • Red - survey done / needs relief => CTC Flood Relief Center / other NGOs contact volunteer => dispatch relief materials => email in...@chennaitrekkers.org to clear this area
  • Green - survey done / relief complete => no further action required

Warning: markers on the map indicate approximate location. Contact the survey volunteer to understand the exact neighborhood/street.

We overlaid Dec 3rd flood data (light red highlighted zones) generated by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in collaboration with the JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). More details over here.

Relief areas for Cuddalore, Tiruvalur, Kanchipuram, Chengelpet can also be added (change filter on top).
