Grow Your Own Saplings(GYOS) Stall at Kuppai Thiruvizha

Kuppai Thiruvizha’, an initiative by the Organisation, Kuppai Matters, was a two-day event designed to sensitize and expose students and general public on the idea of ‘reduce, reuse, repair, refuse and recycle’. The event held at Nageswara Rao park in Mylapore focused on creating a dialogue on solid waste management through stalls showcasing  Eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, up-cycling of plastic, repair cafe to spot-fix shoes, clothes and bags as well as an open mic where citizens could talk about issue related to trash and waste management.

Chennai Trekking Club's Green Wing Ainthinai set up a Grow Your Own Saplings Stall at Kuppai Thiruvizha. The main objective was to encourage volunteers to raise Native Tree saplings in their home itself by sowing seeds, transplanting and grow it for the next 6 months to develop a bond between themselves and the sapling.

Around 50 to 60 GYOS Kits were collected from Ainthinai by the citizens varying from Kids, School Students, Senior Citizens and families. Each of them wholeheartedly guaranteed to raise the saplings with love and care

It's not just about Planting and Growing Trees... It's about Giving Birth!

Experience the joy of caring for them!!

Goal of the initiative?

CTC Ainthinai has been involved in Tree Plantation activities from 2012 onward with the support of numerous volunteers. We used to procure saplings from Forest Department Nurseries, Private Nurseries and other nurseries which are run by NGOs. We want to our volunteers and build and feel the relationship with the sapling from the early stage itself. The volunteers take the role of a Mother raising a child, where the child here is the Seed. As the volunteers are involved in this initiative, they could get more insights about the saplings in its different stages of growth.

1) How to sow a seed?

2) How many days will the seed take to germinate?

3) How much amount of water we need to pour?

4) How to transplant a sapling from one cover to another ?

5) How much manure & soil we need to mix?

6) How many days it takes for a sapling to raise 5ft?

7) How to save the sapling from the pests?

The above are the most common and basic questions we raise and also experience the answers too. By involving in this initiative, we get more idea about raising a sapling by ourselves. We will be providing constant support and guidance over the period.
