Hi Gents!

I spoke with David yesterday and he had an interesting idea.  As we are all working on different languages and different platforms, some that run on the JVM and some that don't, might it make more sense to broaden our group to be a polyglot language and platforms group?  This would open up the possibility of doing talks on just about anything, but including platforms like Ruby, JavaScript, Go, C++ (that's for you Brian).  We've also morphed a bit as a group over the last 5 years where many of our members have broadened their use of different languages and tools as we've aged and gained experience.  Although this clearly includes Alternative JVM languages it obviously includes languages not on the JVM as well.

And just imagine the Acronym?  SacPP?  Who doesn't love that?  Well we might need to work on that a bit...

Let me know what you think.  We can discuss it on here and at the next meeting.

Yeah, the name Groovy is too limited for what we actually cover. I was going to bring up that we should really push the alternative JVM language, but polyglot is just as well. With my stake being in Java, I'd favor JVM languages, but would mind if it was broader.

And I am interested in a a couple talks. The first one would be about web frameworks in Immutant(Clojure) and/or Yesod(Haskell). Also WebMachine looks very interesting. I am just looking into them and have to get up to speed on both the framework and language enough to do a simple intro to them.

Very cool!  Well unless the core members changes dramatically we will continue to be fairly JVM focused.  But we all use or have used Ruby, JavaScript, etc.  And I would love to hear more about the Go language.  Haskell is another I'd love to know more about.  Even if you aren't using Ruby specifically you might be using Ruby tools like SASS.

There is a new Groovy tool called Grain for static website generation.  It has dependencies on Ruby and Python.  So it might be a cool one to talk about soon.  We could look into using it for our NEW WEBSITE.

Wow harsh and bitter laughter, Brian!

I'd be happy to let MS folks talk.  It would be interesting to see what they are up to.

Hi, Steve, Ed, Brian M,  Tom,  other old pals -

hope you guys are well.  one comment.     Ruby is JVM-able  (JRuby !)     Javascript is JVM-able  (Rhino !)       -   you can certainly keep the JVM focus and still cover a lot of ground.      (jython, scala, closure, and the list goes on and on)

look forward to catching one of your talks when i'm in sac area.

Don't forget Nashorn and DynJS.  Who doesn't want to run Node on the JVM (me)?

If you want to play with Haskel there's a pretty decent web IDE on the https://www.fpcomplete.com/ site.  They have a paid and a freebie side of things.

Arguments about the second amendment used to revolve around whether guns keep us free. These days, however, they're all about whether guns keep us safe. Something significant has already been lost, even if we still have the right to bear arms.
