Students from classes in SUNY Oswego's creative writing, chemistry and cinema and screen studies programs work on a recent weekend shoot in the Shineman Center, part of a collaborative effort to develop a series of short films on laboratory safety.
Each course has taught me something different, both about the material and about myself as an artist. Each class is another added piece to the puzzle and the best part is that the improvement and self-actualization never has to end.
My favorite part of my major is how well everyone knows each other. Having worked in the cinema equipment checkout, I've gotten to know a lot of the people in my major. The department atmosphere is one of a tight-knit community where students help each other with film projects.
Description
The Cinema and Screen Studies Program offers a strong Liberal Arts perspective on motion picture and television history, culture, theory, and production. Students are introduced to cinema as a medium of mass communication which combines two art forms, photography and theater, to communicate powerful stories with vivid pictures and strong emotion. Students investigate cinema and television through critical studies and create images of their own through scriptwriting and introductory production opportunities. Finally, students gain an appreciation for cinema and television from a commercial standpoint since these media exist not only in the marketplace of ideas but also as end products of an industrial enterprise.
Upon completion of this degree, students are able to continue their studies at baccalaureate film or mass media degree programs where they apply what they have learned at MCC to more advanced studies in this or related fields.

CSS is dedicated to what we call "critical filmmaking." We believe filmmakers are best able to develop their own voice and vision by studying the history, art and theory of cinema. We also believe that film critics and scholars can develop complex and rich understandings of cinema by having been trained in the practice. This truly integrated approach manifests in our curriculum, where we merge theory and practice, and students with varied interests and specialities work together in teams on collaborative projects. Our faculty work together both in and outside of the classroom to help our 150 majors succeed in the major and college. Our alumni are deeply connected to the program and frequently return to campus to help guide students in their transition to post-college life and careers.
Today, the very idea of cinema is in flux. No longer does it exclusively involve projected images in a darkened auditorium. Now, filmmakers create work that is viewed on televisions, computers, hand-held devices, and even cellular phones. The purpose of the M.A. in cinema studies is not merely to invest in its students a specific body of facts; rather, it is to prepare them to engage with the changing cinematic landscape and to understand its broadest aesthetic and cultural implications across media.
To do this, the program provides a solid foundation in those areas traditionally associated with advanced study in the discipline: cinema history, theory, criticism, and aesthetics. At the same time, it fosters intellectual independence and ask its students to pursue research that deepens understanding of the cinematic past while contextualizing present and future cinematic forms.

We tried to highlight its function by showing the contour of the amphitheater on the facades - the ceiling membrane goes up, towards the screen inside creating a recognizable silhouette. Maybe it is not immediately recognizable as a cinema but its spatial solutions should give a hint that there's some kind of auditorium inside.
