I've used Opera 12.02 many times in the past with Windows 98, but after reinstalling Windows on my desktop, I can't seem to get it to run or install. I downloaded the installer from here and set the KernelEx compatibility mode to Windows 2000 SP4, but when I run it, I get this error:
Opera has failed to access or upgrade your profile. This may have occurred because your computer has insufficient resources available or because some files are locked by other applications. You may have to restart your computer before Opera will start again.
I'm running Windows 98 SE on a 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM, so this is well more than sufficient resources, and I have barely anything running. I've run Opera before on this machine without any troubleRebooting does not help. I downloaded the file 3 times just to make sure it isn't corrupt, but I still get the error. I've tried Opera 11.64, and I get the same error. Extracting the setup files to a directory and trying to run opera.exe also produces same error. Right now, I'm stumped. Any ideas?
Update to Fx 3.0.14. At least you'd be using a version of Firefox
which doesn't have several public, unpatched vulnerabilities like Fx
3.0.11 does.I'd create a new profile for test purposes and see if that fixes the
problem. If it does, then you can migrate your settings and data from
the old profile to the new one.I'll see if I can get the launchy.xml to work for Opera 10 too. I'll
get back to you here if I can.Hope this helps.--
"Trim your follow-ups."
This launchy.xml file supports Opera too. By the way, for at least a
year I've noticed that sometimes Launchy > Open Link in IE often
doesn't work. It doesn't work for Opera either. It may be caused by
a subtle incompatibility with Fx 3.0 and Fx 3.5.
Hi Maurice,
I have Opera (it is Opera 10) in my launchy.xml which can be seen in
'm not sure if auto detection is every time or just when you first install Launchy.
Also not sure if you are using Launchy for the first time or are indicating that it
is not working for you. Will assume a bit closer to you've used it before.Perhaps this is the first problem that you might be having with other extensions
as well. Deleting extensions.rdf in your chrome directory, and localstore.rdf
might help. As might uninstalling Launchy and reinstall Launchy. You will still have
all of your extensions show up as localstore.rdf and extensions.rdf are both recreated.
What you will lose is your customization of toolbars that you did through
View, Toolbars, Customization meaning you will have to change back to small icons
and move your icons around or back to your toolbars -- so taking a picture beforehand
of your toolbars would help.Quick tip on using launchy.xml, since you have to have the coded integer correct,
I show each code in the descriptions included within launchy.xml so I know
that it is found because I added it and also what the coded integer is and that it is working.
Any mistake in the XML syntax will cause it to fail. If it is a matter of not having used Launchy before. you won't see IrfanView show up
unless you right-click on an image. For Opera, I had to add to launchy.xml though
that could be because I had the extension installed before I had install Opera years ago.
My notes on Launchy are at (you may be better off pasting links to browser to get within topic)

launchy.xml is set up for a Windows system.Henrik Gemal has documented his extension quite well on his site, but my notes may help for
things slightly out of the ordinary, such as using multiple profiles.--
HTH,
David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site
Firefox Custom:
For checking XML syntax try _validate.aspIf that doesn't show up a problem:
Did you post your complete launchy.xml -- Was going to to suggest all of the
1's together before the 7's but I don't think that is the problem. If you are trying
to include double quotes to include spaces then that is a problem. As we indicated what you are trying to do is not a problem (at least not in Windows)
my example is
and I forgot to include Henrik's page before (though I did suggest reading his documentation).
be sure you have the TYPE code correct. (1 for browsers, ..., 6 for editors, 7 for images)Now the very message that I am replying to disappeared from my listing of newsgroup postings,
(I am looking at threaded view of all postings in newsgroup, not just those unread)
though I think I had noticed it had a back timestamp on it., which if true would mean
your computer clock was not set correctly. Maybe I'll see thread better after posting.
You're welcome. Open Link in Opera doesn't always work, but I've
found that opening the current page in Opera does work with Launchy >
Open in Opera.Hope this helps. Can you live better with this? :)
This thread in Google Groups:
_frm/thread/269ed08c4890981c/37ad5ccab2a023ffEither the time on Maurice's computer is set incorrectly for local time and date and the time
difference, or Thunderbird, or Windows is messing up timestamps for New Caledonia. I see
a proper thread on Google Groups, but I am missing the original post by Maurice on my local
store (Windows Live Mail) and the threading is incorrect on my local store. It always seemed
to me that problems with missing postings had something to do with TB, maybe it also has
something to do with locations near the International Time Line during certain times.Of course there are other reasons that some messages disappear from other users
and they are typically those that turn off archiving. Google won't archive if someone
indicates archiving whether on or off (unless they fixed that). (reg, >Q
1. I had an error in the XML file, a missing ; I probably
deleted it inadvertently.
The only application that doesn't show up in the menu is Google Chrome;
are the following lines correct?
Google Chrome
1
C:\Documents and Settings\Maurice\Local
Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
2. my computer clock was not set correctly; maybe it changed after a
'blue screen".Tanks again for your efficient help.

Easy to spot problem in someone else's code.
You have unmatched double quote between command tags, as I indicated
I've not been able to include quotes in launchy.xml, remove that quote.
The problem occurs when you use spaces in a Firefox profile name, I've not
been successful at that and had to rename the profile name to without spaces,
which is easy but does not change he actual filename. Surprised that the XML syntax checker did not pick that up, even though
I guess it is not part of the XML syntax. Since there is a space I guess you need
the double quote at the beginning (not sure), but using quotes. Thanks for telling me your computer time was incorrect, that certainly seems
to explain the loss of a posting in the thread as seen in OE variant Windows
Live Mail and okay in Google. I think the time is part of the message-id,
which might never be a problem unless the original poster posts later with
an earlier date. It's interesting the way that Google handles the change of
subject title in the threaded view and back to original title.
Running the Portable Apps version of Opera , version 11.51.1087.0.
Not sure how/why/when it happened, but as of a couple of days ago, I can not start Opera Portable normally--when starting it from either the Portable Apps launcher or the OperaPortable.exe in the OperaPortable folder, I get an error stating "Another instance of Opera, Portable Edition is currently closing. Please wait for it to finish before launching it again." But after waiting...and waiting...and even rebooting, I still get the same error. Using Task Manger, I don't see any processes related to Opera running. Opera is not installed on this computer--only Opera Portable on a mapped networked drive (with a drive letter), and it was working just fine until a couple of days ago.
What's odd is that I can successfully launch Opera by opening the Opera.exe file in the H:\MyDocs\PortableApps\OperaPortable\App\Opera folder, and it will load my profile and run fine. But something tells me that this isn't ideal, and it certainly defeats the purpose of having an entry for Opera in my Portable Apps Launcher.
Can someone please fill me in on how to fix this?
TIA!
Hi guys, thanks for the question & answer, it solved my problem.
I just want to add, the solution given can be used also for other portable apps which have the same problem.
Once again, thank you!
This problem has just occurred for no obvious reason.
PortableApps 14.4.1
Opera Portable 48.0.2685.32
It has been working for a long time and now suddenly this message, "Another instance of Opera, Portable Edition is running". There was no observable provocation for this error - no crash, no USB drive removal before eject.
I have searched and found advice about deleting various files, ?.ini and others from the Opera Portable subfolders, but this advice seems out of date - I cannot find any of the files previously mentioned for suggested deletion in past support articles. The platform must have updated.
I have looked everywhere for text config files, and cannot guess where the problem is.
Task manager shows no Opera running.
In PA options, "Close Apps on Platform Exit" was already permanently selected and still is.
I have closed the PA platform, physically ejected the USB drive, and retried - problem still exists.
I have rebooted the PC (Windows 10) and retried - problem still exists.
I have uninstalled Opera Portable, ensured the folders are gone, and reinstalled Opera Portable - problem still exists.
Funny thing: IF I leave the error message window in place, and then I again go to PA menu and select same Opera Portable a second time, after a delay Opera Portable starts and runs alongside its own error window. I can change settings values in Opera Portable, close the Opera Portable error window, and then, after a delay, again choose Opera Portable from the PA menu, and I get the error window again.
