Festival de la Isla Celebrates 13 Years of Salsa Music & Dance:
Direct from Puerto Rico -- Domingo Quinones & Pedro Brull!
Vacaville, CA - The 2014 Annual Festival de la Isla will bring some of today’s most exciting and salsa performers to Solano County on Saturday, August 23rd, 2014.   The festival site is the historic Pena Adobe Park located at 1 Pena Adobe Road, just outside of Vacaville.
Also, every year, FLDI picks a Solano County-based charity to assist those in need of assistance.  This year’s theme is “Giving Thanks” in which attendees can help support the non-profit “The Father’s House” by bringing a can of food to assist those that are struggling in this tumultuous economy.
Thousands of Latin music enthusiasts from throughout California annually gather to share their love for the sights, sounds, taste and aromas of Puerto Rican music, dance, food and drink.  The event runs from 10:00 am through 7:00 pm.  It has become an annual tradition in which the Solano County Puerto Rican community comes together to celebrate culture, family and make new friends.  Parking is free.  In addition, there is a children’s activity area.
Salsa Music Legend – Domingo Quinones!
Domingo Quiñones is an acclaimed salsa singer. He is also a composer, producer and actor.   He began his career with the Conjunto Nativo.  He also performed with other groups, including the orchestra of Rafael de Jesús, with José Alberto “El Canario”, with Johnny Rodriguez and the Conjunto Clásico.  In 1985 he replaced Roberto Lugo in the orchestra of Luis “Perico” Ortiz with whom he recorded four albums, including La vida en broma (1985), In Tradition (1986) and Perico (1987). He then sang for a time with Louie Ramirez and Roberto Roena.
In 1990, he signed as a solo artist with RMM and released his first solo album: Domingo es mi nombre.  After joining Tito Puente on his 100th record, Quiñones released his second solo album Pintando Lunas.  That album included a duet entitled “Dos Amigos” with Tony Vega and a salsa version of the song “Crazy for You” which proved his great versatility.
This was followed by six additional recordings with RMM, including one of his most important productions: “Se necesita un milagro”, selected as one of the most influential albums by the National Foundation for Popular Culture of Puerto Rico. Among his many popular songs was “Mi Negrita Me Espera.”
In 1998, he demonstrated his acting abilities in the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, together with Olga Tañón, Michael Stuart and Tito Auger of the music group Fiel a la Vega. This was followed by playing the role of the legendary singer Hector Lavoe in the New York play, Quien Mato a Hector Lavoe? with songs like “La Voz de Siempre”. The play and his performance won kudos from the critics including the New York Times, proclaiming that Quiñones captured the very essence of Lavoe’s life and music.
He returned to producing music recordings with the release of Poeta y Guerrero which included his own compositions. But his acting days were not over yet as he won the role of Sgt. Miller in the movie Héroes de Otra Patria, about Puerto Rican soldiers in the Vietnam War. The film won Honorable Mention in the Festival de Cine de Viña del Mar (Chile) and was the official entry from Puerto Rico in the foreign film category of the 1999 Oscar competition. His more recent film roles included that of a San Juan music promoter in Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s 2007 film “El Cantante.”
Pedro Brull – The Big Man with the Big Voice!
Pedro Brull was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico and began his career in the 70′s when his neighbor heard him sing , and then invited him to be part of a local salsa band.  For over 30 years, he has been recognized as a lead singer.  Brull is nicknamed ‘The sonero heavyweight “not only for his bulky figure , but for the great size of his voice and his talent.  Currently Brull is still displaying his voice and always delighting salsa music fans.  He is constantly on tour and always sharing his love for salsa music with his audience.
