Triple Tribute Headliners – 2010 Entertainment Line-up:
Directly from Puerto Rico, three of the finest salsa music entertainers and their feature singers will be coming to Festival de la Isla 2010. They include:
Hector Lavoe – El Cantante:
Feature singer: Van Lester – La Canta A Hector
Lavoe has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls featuring salsa, as well as jazz events like the Newport Jazz Festival. His recordings have garnered him many awards and gold albums. His success is attributed to his musical expression of his unique Jibaro Salsa flavor and his love for Puerto Rico. Héctor possesses a talent comprised of many elements including, great voice, clear enunciation, marvelous phrasing, and lyrical interpretation. Throughout his career, Lavoe has endured numerous personal tragedies, including a physically debilitating accident. Despite it all, he continues to make personal appearances. As a pioneer of salsa, Lavoe has established himself as a successful singer and is recognized as a legend in his own time.
Tommy Olivencia
Feature singer: Parkito Acosta – La Canta a Tommy
For 35 years, Olivencia's band has acted as an "incubator' for various notable solo salsa singers, including Marvin Santiago, Paquito Guzman, Lalo Rodriguez, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Frankie Ruiz and Hector Tricoche. He favors a frontline of trumpets and trombones, and used a combination of four trumpets and two trombones on most of his albums. Early vocalists with Olivencia's band included Chamaco Ramirez and Paquito Guzman (ex-Joe Quijano band member).
Frankie Ruiz – El Papa de la Salsa:
Feature singer: Mel Martinez – Le Canta A Frankie
Jose Antonio Terresola Ruiz was born in Paterson, New Jersey, USA. As a teenager Ruiz moved to Puerto Rico and eventually became vocalist with Orquesta La Solución. He stayed with the group for three years before moving on to the Tommy Olivencia orchestra for another three years. As his career began heating up, Ruiz became one of the first idols youth related to because of his own young age, handsome good looks, and true singing ability. By the mid 1980’s, Ruiz began recording as a solo artist. He toured extensively and was one of the most sought-after artists on the salsa music scene. Ruiz made significant contributions to salsa music and specifically to the “salsa sensual” movement, also known as salsa romantica. He helped to revive salsa at a time when its popularity was on a downturn. He continues to perform at salsa music venues throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
