This unpainted prototype Festina was built in September 1998. I raced it at
the HPVA Championships in Ft. Ord, CA in October 1998 and won the
unfaired/partially faired 15 mile criterium on it plus did well in the
other races. I took it on a few club rides in 1998 and then loaned it to
Sandiway Fong for a while as he was considering a Festina for
Paris-Brest-Paris. Some time in the Spring of 1999 I got the bike back from
Sandiway, reassembled it using a much stronger front boom and took it on
the Mt. Hamilton Challenge. Then I took it on the very hilly Central Coast
Double Century and the not so hilly Davis Double Century. It did great on
all these rides and never induced pain in any part of my body other than my
legs which is just how it should be. The all mesh seat design is the most
comfortable recumbent seat I've ridden.

Specifications:
Festina 20/20 prototype with unpainted frame (needs blasting and painting
or powdercoating to look good)
Tyres: Tioga Comp Pool 47-406 tyres front and rear
Tubes: Schwalbe presta valve
Rims: Alesa aluminium, open section, very wide at a bit over 30mm outside width
Spokes: stainless steel, 2.0mm
Front hub: narrow hub from a Brompton with nutted axle
Rear hub: Sachs 3x7, 135mm spacing
Cassette: Shimano IG-50 11-30 7-speed
Rear derailer: Shimano 105 short cage
Front derailer: Shimano Ultegra Triple (just being used for chain retention
but can take 2 rings)
Front derailer tube: adjustable in angle and lateral positioning
Crankset: Dotek with 46T chainring as used on 1997 and early 1998 BikeEs
(can run 2 rings for 42-spd)
Bottom bracket: Shimano cartridge type
Bottom bracket shell: laterally adjustable with pinch bolt clamp system
Shifters: Shimano Ultegra bar-end for derailer and Shimano 3-speed thumb for hub
Brakes: Shimano STX-RC V-Brakes
Brake levers: Shimano STX-RC

The seat angle is adjustable and the seat can be moved fore-aft on the
frame. The seat angle is presently set at 35 degrees, it could be laid back
slightly more by moving the seat all the way forwards. The seat could move
perhaps another 50mm forwards. The boom is presently adjusted as far back
as it can go so the crank barely clears the tyre and in this position it
fits this 183cm rider with 90cm inseam (6' 36" inseam). You can't be too
much shorter than me to ride this bike which is perhaps its greatest
useability drawback. I found the chain running beside the front wheel very
easy to get used to.

Now you can have this fast, smooth riding, comfortable, compact piece of
history for $1700 plus shipping. A new Festina frameset alone would be
$1250. The fact that this bike is unpainted is good for experimenter types
that want to do things like add fairing mounts. The rear chainstay to main
tube junction is at an unused bottom bracket shell which looks like it
could form the basis of an intermediate drive conversion.
