Hi Fellow Cruisers,

The Board of the CYCSA has approved a Masterplan process to guide the development of the Club’s facilities over the next 10 years.

Nelson Architects have been selected to assist in this process and to undertake a Stage 1 consultancy for the Club involving:

·       Engaging with Stakeholders to ascertain their views on what they see as requirements and priorities,

·       Engaging with a specialist hospitality consultant to identify requirements to implement the Board’s vision for the Club’s hospitality function and

·       Developing broad concept plans, and preparation of site/space diagrams with assumptions behind concepts, and with independent QS advice, indicative costings to deliver on requirements.

The CYCSA has a formal process to reach out to stakeholder groups which is underway.  Those groups comprise each of the Associations, the Marine Academy, sponsors, contractors, external customers and the various staff groups.

The CYCSA invites your input through your preferred Association (in this case, the Cruising Association through SA Cruisers) or directly to the General Manager, Adam Hayes, if you wish.

Some cruising specific suggestions so far:

·      revamp the CYCSA BBQ area with full outdoor kitchen, fridge, etc.

·      install a laundry, with washing machines, and dryers

·     upgrade the BBQ area at the Port Vincent Marina (and move away from the men’s toilets)

Submissions on this site close on 30 Nov 2019.

Cheers, Adrian Wotton, Chair CYCSA Cruising Association

Thanks Adrian,

Some suggestions for your list in rough priority order (some may be on the current action list):

1.      Upgrade of shower and toilet facilities. This is well below standard for a premium yacht club at present and some showers don’t always work properly.

2.      Providing filtered water to Marina East. The current water quality is very poor.

3.      Providing state of the art “buffering” along the side of berths to protect moored boats, and additional tie off cleats where required.

4.      Better benching and power access in the slipping area.

5.      Improving consistency of lighting along some of the marina walkways.

6.      Improving the quality of walking surfaces on the walkways in Marina East to improve appearance and avoid trip hazards.

7.      Investigate whether better non-slip surfaces exist for use at the boat ramp launching area.

8.      Marina wi-fi access.

9.      Adding to the existing promotional plan to improve Club membership, by making boating an easier to access and more attractive activity.

10.   Additional parking.

You will note that my suggestions are focussed on “boating” improvements, rather than hospitality, and I feel that it is important that the Masterplan has a balance. It is important that the Masterplan balances things that benefit members daily use of the Club in a way that attracts new members with hospitality functions that assists raising the revenue that the Club requires to progress. The value of members on water berths has declined over the years, and some consideration should be included in the Masterplan on how to arrest and reverse this trend. I am not sure of the age demographics of the club, but making the Club interesting, attractive to join and vibrant for the younger generation must be part of the Masterplan.

Not sure if this is what you wanted, but a few thought starters to kick around anyway. Happy to discuss any of these if you like.

Regards,

Kevin Mann

Hi All,

Thank you Kevin for excellent points, all of which I support.

I would add a request for more club moorings at popular places (Black Point, Edithburgh, etc).

Regards to all,

Len

Hi Everyone

Thank you Kevin (and Len) for an excellent list of requests and accompanying rationale for the Masterplan.
I feel very confident in saying your submission would be supported by a significant majority of Senior Members.
To put ourselves in the shoes of a prospective, new member who is considering where to berth his/her new boat, I think we need to consider why we ourselves joined the CYC some years ago.
In my case at least, it was because of the security and quality of the berthing facilities (wet and hard stand) and the range of (non racing) boating activities on offer. As an aside, I believe we non racing skippers are still a significant majority of the Senior Members.
I was further attracted by the fact I could go cruising in company for days and/or weeks at a time, confident in the knowledge that I’d left my car in a secure car park. I could also return to a refreshing shower in attractive facilities.
Given the abundance of berths in Adelaide at present, I believe the only way we will retain our present membership and attract new Senior Members, is to return to and concentrate on those aspects of our “core business”, while also accepting the importance of the hospitality aspect.
Your list Kevin, does exactly that.

Kind regards to all
Chris Morphett

I agree completely with Chris, particularly with the quality of berthing , security and slipping. I also think our “core business” now and into the future revolves around recreational boating rather than racing, and we will most likely see more power boats.

As more of us are becoming grandparents, and in with the view to  attracting younger members my suggestion is that we might like to look at some playground equipment near the BBQ area so that parents and kids can all be together rather than having to go and use the playground facilities outside.

Cheers

Ron

I would add my support. I think Chris has reflected a significant number of peoples view on the spirit of the club, and Kevin has put together a meaningful list.

I guess that is what a Master plan should do, build a vision for detailed plans to be actioned.  That said I guess the first question that should be asked and stated is what is the phillosophical vision of the CYCSA?  Only by answering that and getting the majority of the membership to agree can one develop a meaningful master plan for the future infrastructure needs.

Just my two cents worth.  And one final word.  Every time I come back to Adelaide I am reminded that the CYCSA is one of the best clubs I have been to
