What I have learned from experience is that your content plays a big role in the decision on menus. It has evolved (trended) over ages between left sided menus to right sided to top menus. Each has their own benefits & limitations when it comes to content presentation. And that is probably why there is no definite answer to "You must use this".

E.g.
Top menus 
Positive: Allows your content presentation to have more horisontal room across the screen. You also have the luxury of having visible secondary navigation on the left or right, which improves the chance of the user seeing what he needs to see.
Negative: Small screens limits the amount of top level options.

The other menu options have a variant on these 3 points.
